Layer and Breeder Building

Layer and Breeder Building

The Layer and Breeder Building was one of the buildings located at the former Agriculture Center along northbound Interstate 45.

The 8,840 square-foot structure housed poultry, specifically layers (chickens raised for egg production) and breeders (chickens grown for selective breeders).

For six years, starting around 1988-89, the Agriculture Department used the eastern end of the building for alligator research. Later, when the building was unused, the department proposed a parking lot on the site [1].

The building, not in use since the mid-1990s, was demolished in late 2010. SHSU also removed an underground waste collection tank during this time.
