With over 45 Zoids in my collection I began to look into getting some of the more exotic or rare ones. I already had OJR King Gojulas, OJR Deathsaurer, NJR Mad Thunder, and NJR Ultrasaurus. The ever-wonderful Gilvader via eBay was (and continues to be) way, way too expensive. So I looked for others. Bigasaurus does not appeal to me much, however Mammoth was interesting from a esthetic point of view.
Still, most of the Mammoth prices on eBay were $40 and up for a fully functioning piece. Tomy also released the limited edition Zoids Core Box which included a new Mammoth, however that was going for over $100. Too much for my budget.
Then one day I saw a Mammoth on eBay for only $15. This was the Radio Shack version with dark blue armor, olive drab body shell, and "Tandy" on the battery cover. It had a broken tail but even with the seller disclaimer of "as is", it otherwise seemed OK.
After winning the auction for $18 I paid the seller and my Mammoth was delivered in a very compact box, disassembled. It looked as though this once beloged to a hasty builder, since there was a lot of sprue residue on some of the parts. All the weapons and body pieces were present, however the link that makes the trunk move was missing. (So THAT'S why there was not much bidding competition...)
I first repaired the tail by gluing it to the body. Then, after a bit of trail and error, I fabricated a new link for the trunk.
After a little more cleanup my Mammoth was ready to go!
