custom zoid: Gun Liger
(Assault / Fire Suport)
(Assault / Fire Suport)
This is the story of my 17th Zoids custom. Or, "What I did to celebrate the start of my retirement."
After decades of reliable service, the Republic found itself with numerous Shield Ligers in various states of disrepair. While the Shield Liger type provided a good Defense, the Republic wanted to also improve their Offense. Thus they repurposed and upgraded some of their trustworthy Shield Ligers by replacing the Shield capability with a new gun platform mounting the latest weapons, and removed the shoulder and hip side armors to help offset some of the weight being added. They call their new platform "Gun Liger".

Concept
During the summer of 2022 I acquired a few collections of various Zoids parts via eBay, and managed to reconstruct a few Zoids to about 90%. These reconstructions would typically have an obvious and noticeable missing part (or parts), such as a jaw, head, and/or major body armor part.
For this project, I started with a Shield Liger that was missing the lower jaw, and the shoulder and hip armors.
Gun Platform
I started by creating a "backpack" from modified Command Wolf body shells. CD case liner filled in the gaps. A Spinosapper head was cut down to serve as a cockpit for the Weapons Control Officer. Bits of sprue were added to serve as gun rotation mounts.
In the background you can see that I used a part from Hammerhead to replace the missing body shell clamp.
New Weapons and Teeth
I created a suite of new weapons for Gun liger:
The gun at is upper left is from Demon Lizard / Hel Digunner, with modified Liger Zero leg linkages for the elevation pivots, with leg supports and base from modified CP-15 parts.
The twin gun at the upper right is from Bear Fighter, with a base formed from modified CP-04 parts.
The gray guns at the lower half of the picture are created from LEGO parts, with "vents" from modified Liger Zero leg caps. The white elevation mounts are modified Ray Saurer parts, glued to swivel mounts from CP-01.
A replacement lower jaw from Liger Zero was modified to attach to the Shield Liger lower jaw linkage. The saber fangs were cut down and then used to create additional teeth which attached to a new upper mouth plate.
The silver Shield Liger teeth were painted to match the gold teeth from Liger Zero.
The rump cover is a cut-down part from CP-01.
Since the new weapons "backpack" covers the power switch, I fabricated an extension from CD Case Liner to allow the power switch to be turned On/Off with the new weapons platform in place.
