Faerun
Faerûn is a major continent on the planet of Abeir-Toril. The majority of official Forgotten Realms material covers this continent, and it has had more attention than any other area of the planet.Moonsea: Welcome to The Moonsea. The northern frontiers of the Realms. Bitter, cold, and harsh to those unprepared but full of ruins, magic, and wealth to those that know where to look.
The Moonsea is rich indeed . . . gold and jewels, valuable pelts, and old ruins ripe for plundering. But it is a hard place to live – cold, brutal, and dangerous, and it makes those who live there into something much the same, tempering the soft iron of their spirits into cold, sharp steel. The people of the Moonsea are hard and unforgiving because if they weren’t they’d be dead at the hands of monsters, tyrants, or the cruel turns of nature itself. ~ Khelben “Blackstaff” Arunsun
Chult: Chult is located at the westernmost end of the Chultan peninsula, in the southern part of the Trackless Sea, off the coast of Calimshan. During the Sundering, Chult was cut off from the mainland, forming an island. Before that, Chult was again forming the westernmost end of the peninsula. Regardless of geographical status, Chult has always been remote and isolated, forming a mountainous jungle of savage beasts, hulking dinosaurs, and disease-ridden swamps. Savage human tribes, goblins, and even stranger monstrous folk haunted the thick jungles. Nevertheless, Chult drew adventurers who sought its legendary riches. The primordial Ubtao was almost exclusively revered in the land, for the divine powers of Faerûn awarded Ubtao the dominion over the land of Chult in exchange for the deity's vigilance over the threat from under the Peaks of Flame.
The Moonsea: The shores of the Moonsea have long been home to cities that rise swiftly, relying on vigorous trade and gathering powerful mercenaries to their banners, only to overextend themselves and fall - sometimes crumbling over time, and sometimes dropping like stones from the sky. Now that Netheril and Myth Drannor have fallen, those two great powers can no longer exert their influence over the Moonsea, allowing the city of Hillsfar to spread its wings and eye southward expansion, and Mulmaster to once again further the worship of Bane.
Phlan, Teshwave, Thentia, and Voonlar - all Moonsea cities where greater powers jockeyed for influence - now work to find their own identities before an unchecked or malevolent realm swallows them, one by one. This region is also home to the ruins of the Citadel of the Raven and Zhentil Keep, former strongholds of the Zhentarim, which the Black Network shows occasional interest in restoring.
Storyline Seasons
(Josiah) The Chaos on Melvaunt is set in the Moonsea town of Melvaunt.
CORE 1-1 A Scream in the Night: The City of a Thousand Forges, Melvaunt, is one of the most prosperous and stable on the Moonsea. All that is about to change, as a series of strange murders perplexes local law enforcement agents. The threat of a crazed murderer might be the least of Melvaunt’s worries.
Season 1: Tyranny of Dragons is set around the Moonsea town of Phlan. The early adventures are various missions you are offered in the town, most of which relate to activities of the Cult of the Dragon, which are causing trouble in the area. At the end of the season, the Cult invade Phlan, causing its people to flee.
Season 2: Elemental Evil is set around the Moonsea town of Mulmaster, a place where arcane magic is distrusted. Several stories revolve around the plight of the refugees from Phlan, as the adventurers are asked to perform missions that will aid them. Meanwhile, the cult of Elemental Evil is active around the town, and feature as threats in several adventures. Finally, another thread tells the story of a magic artefact and its significance to the leadership of Mulmaster.
Season 3: Rage of Demons is set around the Moonsea town of Hillsfar, a place with a tyrannical leadership that hate non-humans and have recently enacted a set of particularly oppressive laws, fueled by the madness caused by the Demon Lords rampaging through the Underdark (as seen in Out of the Abyss). The adventures are split between dealing with this insane government and dealing with the threat of the demons in the Underdark, with the plight of the refugees from Phlan still being an element.
(Nico) Season 4: Curse of Strahd begins with the characters as part of an alliance to reclaim Phlan from the Cult of the Dragon, but the dark tendrils of Ravenloft instead divert the characters into that realm, where they have to deal with the machinations of Strahd.
(Gary) Season 5: Storm King's Thunder takes the heroes away from the Moonsea to several locations across the Sword Coast. Revisit Parnast, the town taken over by the Cult of the Dragon; discover Stagwick, a small community on the east bank of the Clear Whirl River; and Beregost a bustling trade town just south of Candlekeep. The folk of the Sword Coast are at risk of being crushed underfoot from the onslaught of giant foes. The only chance at survival is to investigate this invasion and harness the power of rune magic, the giants’ weapon against their ancient enemy the dragons.
Season 6: Tales from the Yawning Portal: When the shadows grow long in Waterdeep and the fireplace in the taproom of the Yawning Portal dims to a deep crimson glow, adventurers from across the Forgotten Realms, and even from other worlds, spin tales and spread rumors of dark dungeons and lost treasures. Some of the yarns overheard by Durnan, the barkeep of the Yawning Portal, are inspired by places and events in far-flung lands from across the D&D multiverse, and these tales have been collected into a single season. This season covers seven of the most compelling dungeons from the 40+ year history of Dungeons & Dragons. Some are classics that have hosted an untold number of adventurers, while others are some of the most popular adventures ever printed. Since this season is already a series of shorter adventures (compared to the long campaigns of previous seasons), the D&D Adventurers League will release modules that tie into several of the Tales from the Yawning Portal adventures. The six adventures are directly tied to an adventure as a sequel, a prequel, or expand on some aspect of it. In addition, three of the six adventures are Epic adventures and are paired with one of the three other adventures.
(Josiah) Season 7: Tomb of Annihilation: DDAL07-01 A City on the Edge can be run as adventure hook for Tomb of Annihilation that introduces the characters to Chult and her faction representatives. Later, DDAL07-02 Over the Edge sends the characters deep into the dangerous jungles! From there, the Tier 1 and 2 adventures expand on Tomb of Annihilation’s story and set the stage for Tier 3 and 4 play, which pick up right after the characters complete the hardcover adventure. All along the way however, the DEATH CURSE looms over everything you do. Every decision you make, every battle you fight, every location you explore has the potential to end your character’s life. And if that weren’t enough, once dead, unless other heroes are successful, you’re never coming back. There is still hope however. As previously announced in the Tomb of Annihilation Primer, you can play a surrogate character whose primary goal is to finish what your dead character began in the hopes that you may yet rise again. Contained herein is a copy of the primer plus the surrogate characters that you can play, as well as a special log sheet created specifically for surrogate characters. So pull up your bootstraps and practice your Grung. The Tomb of Annihilation awaits those brave enough to seek it.
Season 8: Waterdeep. Season just announced.
