A portly human emerges from the town hall in Phandalin. He waddles to the notice board outside the building, and carefully tacks a piece of paper to it. Spotting you, he peers suspiciously in your direction, then waves frantically for you to approach. “Adventurers! You are in need! Please join me in the hall!” With no further fanfare, he re-enters the building.
Entering the building, the heroes chat with the townmaster of Phandalin, Harbin Wester, and the co-owner of the Stonehill Inn, Trilena Stonehill:
Trilena: “Master Volo’s patronage has been a boon for the town, no doubt. Unfortunately, his kind words have brought a bit of strife as well. His talk of the monstrous creatures in the area brought the curious, and, quite frankly, the mad. Many people have wandered off to get a glimpse of these creatures described by Master Volo, and we fear that harm has befallen them. We seek characters to track down these foolhardy people and see if they can still be rescued.“Lord Eric Merryweather, a self-proclaimed “hobby-adventurer” in search of fame and glory has not been seen or heard from in days. In his zeal to be the first “adventurer” to follow in Master Volo’s footsteps, Lord Merryweather ventured south to the Crooked Forest. I suggest that you visit a hamlet called Halfway, built on the edge of the forest. Residents of Halfway infrequently visit Phandalin for supplies. Seems to be a good starting point.”
Harbin: “I am concerned about Lord Merryweather’s safety and whereabouts; The people of Phandalin may be blamed for his disappearance. I can offer a total reward of 50 gp (from the town’s coffers, of course) if you can track down the lordling and return him safely to Phandalin.”
The group traveled to the Halfway hamlet, nestled to the south of the Sword Mountains and tucked between Swallow Lake to the west and the lush, dark Crooked Forest (an extension of ther Kryptgarden Forest to the east). The heroes found a idyllic and quiet vista with a wedding party going on in the Come Butte Inn. Lyta Rollings challenged them to share entertaining stories before sharing what she believed to be Lord Merryweather's direction into the Crooked Forest. She serves as Halfway’s mayor, lone barkeep, local law enforcement, and a handful of other official and personal positions.
Traveling through the Crooked Forest, the heroes navigated the densely packed tangled forest, coming across a glade in which a pack of twig blights, led by a needle and vine bliught were attacking Tinus Redbud, a fledgling treant, and her guardian maple. The group managed to defeat the blights and gain Redbud's aid, but not before losing one of their own, the bard Tessi, to the vine blights devastating root corruption. They mourned their comrade and with a heavy hurt moved on to search for Lord Merrweather, even more aware of how close mortality could be.
Tracking Lord Merryweather to a shallow goblin cave, they found him perched on a hillside, unwilling to leave his belongings with the goblins as the goblins enacted a strange and freakish ritual to serve their new flame-wreathed diety "the Angry Eye". Routing the goblins, the heroes were allowed to escort Merryweather back to Phandalin, where they were feted as heroes.
