I love art because I can try new techniques and styles all the time and I don’t have to worry about getting things right or wrong. Another thing I love about making art is that I don’t have to worry if other people like it. All that matters is if I like it. While I was working on this project, I got better at planning out my art, and I got to learn how to bind a book in a bunch of different ways. This piece taught me to explore my ideas more and to be more creative with problem-solving. I really enjoyed the entire process, from deciding what paper to use, and which binding technique to learn, all the way to handwriting and illustrating all my favorite recipes.
The inspiration for this project actually came from inside our school. I got the idea from an SGS student. Beija Levine made a comic with instructions on how to make strawberry tea. I liked it a lot and it inspired me to make a cookbook with all my favorite recipes. My cookbook is important to me because I value family and friendship a lot, and I love to cook and bake with family and friends. All of the recipes featured in my book are favorites at home or were recommended by friends. In fact, most of them are from my mom’s cookbook! To make my cookbook, I used pencils, pens, paper, a needle and thread, and some hot glue. I sketched out my pages with the pencils, then I went over it and colored it in with pens. After I finished all the pages, I used a needle and thread to bind all the pages together. To finish, I secured the binding with hot glue.
