Gracie

I'm Gracie, I'm in 8th grade and this is my art! Art is important to me because it is a fun way to express yourself and it can be a fun way to connect with other people. I think that exploring different types of art is important, and can help make you more creative and enjoy what you're doing more. One of the things that I learned about myself while making this project is that I don't like too much repetition. For this project it was a lot of the same thing over and over. I think that as I was working on this project I have grown to understand why I like to switch and work in different art mediums. I soon found it difficult to stay focused with the piece I was making. This project was the biggest piece that I have ever made out of yarn, and it was difficult for me to correctly estimate how long it would take for me to get it finished.

My inspiration for this project was the cartoony style slices of cake. I wanted this piece of art to be fun and interesting and to seem almost childish. I decided to make my cake big so that it would feel so unrealistic, like something out of a children's book. Using yarn was a way for me to make the piece feel different and odd rather than realistic, like if I were to use clay, or if I made a real cake. I used yarn to crochet 2 orange rectangles, 1 large pink rectangle, 1 pink and 1 orange triangle, 2 smaller pink rectangles, and black yarn for the outlines. I used a double crochet stitch for all of the sides, and for the outline I used a single row of chain stitches.
