2/27/2010 Meet of Champions 0 South Brunswick 0 3 Medalists!
South Brunswick performed well at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, as the team came home with 3 medalists and many other strong performances!
For the girls, Jamie Thompson ran a time of 8.22 to finish 4th in the 55 Hurdles! Her time was only .01 behind the winner, as the 2nd-4th place finishers were all credited with the same time. Her time also lowered her own school record!
Sophia Ginez ran a strong race to finish 5th in the 1600 in a time of 5:04.43! It was the 4th straight year she competed in the 1600 at the MOC, and the 2nd time she medaled!
For the boys, Brian Oni placed 5th in the 55 dash with his time of 6.59, after running a time of 6.53 in the trials.

South Brunswick had a great showing at the Easterns on Tuesday night, as the team set a county record, 2 school records, and came home with 6 sets of medals!
For the boys, Brian Oni finished 3rd in the 55 dash with a time of 6.46 that broke the 8 year old county record!
In addition, Kapil Sathyakumar ran 1:57.89 in the 800 to break the 40 year old school record!
For the girls, the 4x200 team of Melissa Dardani, Alicia Osley, Janae Baker, and Rachel Johnson ran 1:44.08 to break the one year old indoor record by over 1.5 seconds! Their time qualified them for the finals, where they placed 3rd overall!
Also performing well for the Vikings were Jamie Thompson, who was 2nd in the long jump (18-0) and 3rd in the 55 Hurdles (8.34); Mariah Browne, who was 3rd in the triple jump (37-6.5 PR); and the Distance Medley team of Cayla Del Piano (3:45 1200), Osley (59.6 400), Jessica Puchalski (2:23 800), and Sophia Ginez (5:04 1600) that ran 12:13.57 to place 5th with a season-best and the 3rd best time in NJ this year!

2/20/2010 Group IV State Championships 0 South Brunswick 0 2 State Champs!
South Brunswick had arguably it's best showing ever at an indoor state meet on Saturday, as the team had 2 individual Group IV State Champions, advanced a total of 13 athletes to the Meet of Champs, and finished in the top-10 overall on both the boys and girls sides!
Highlighting the boys 9th place team performance was Brian Oni's 6.56 state title winning time in the 55 dash! Oni becomes the 4th boy in school history to win an indoor state title, and only the 2nd in the school's Group IV history!
On the girls side, the team's 7th place finish was led by Jamie Thompson's great time of 8.30 that won the state title in the 55 hurdles! Not only did the time lower her own school record, she also becomes just the second Lady Viking to win an indoor state title, and the first in 10 years!
For the girls, a total of 9 athletes qualified for the Meet of Champs. On the track, Sophia Ginez ran a big season best of 5:04.38 to finish 4th in a competitive 1600 meter field!
Mariah Browne ran a time of 7.41 (7.39 trials) to place 5th in the 55 dash, while the 4x400 team of Janae Baker, Cayla Del Piano, Jamielyn Samper, and Alicia Osley ran 4:05.47 to also place 5th!
Also qualifying for the MOC through a top-6 finish was Ginelle Walker, who placed 6th in the shot put (34-11).
In addition, Del Piano, 7th in the 1600 (5:10.90 indoor PR), and Rachel Johnson, 8th in the 55 dash (7.51 PR) will both advance as wildcards.
Also for the boys, Dominick Padovano placed 6th in the shot put with a near-PR toss of 48-7.75!
In 7th but earning a wildcard berth to the MOC is Kapil Sathyakumar, whose PR time of 1:58.89 in the 800 is also a near school record!
In addition, Derek Forthun's jump of 6-0 earned him a spot as a wildcard.

2/12/2010 Central Jersey Sectionals 0 South Brunswick 0 Back-to-Back Sectional Champions!
The Lady Vikings won their second straight indoor Central Jersey IV Sectional title on Friday night, as they scored 56.5 points to win by a slim 4.5 point margin! The boys team scored 30 points and finished 2nd, their best finish in the 3 year history of the meet!
The girls team had only one individual champion, but had a total of 13 athletes contribute points by scoring in all 9 events!
Leading the way was Mariah Browne, who ran 7.46 to win the 55 by only .01!
Finishing in 2nd were Jamie Thompson in the 55 Hurdles (8.49) and Sophia Ginez in the 1600 (5:09.33).
3rd place finishes were recorded by Rachel Johnson in the 55 (7.55 PR), Cayla Del Piano in the 1600 (5:11.64), and Ginelle Walker in the shot put with a massive PR of almost 2 feet (36-7.5)!
The 4x400 team of Janae Baker, Jessica Puchalski, Jamielyn Samper, and Alicia Osley ran 4:10.64 to place 4th.
Rounding out the scoring were Osley, 5th in the 400 (61.32); Amber Brown, 5th in the shot put (35-0 PR); Amanda Smilgis, 5th in the pole vault (9-0); Puchalski, 6th in the 800 (2:25.00); Del Piano, 6th in the 3200 (11:25.95); and Brooke Sassman, tied for 6th in the high jump (4-10).
The boys meet was highlighted by two winning performances. Derek Forthun won the high jump with a first attempt clearance at 6-2, while Brian Oni captured the 55 in a time of 6.63!
Other medal winners for the boys were Kapil Sathyakumar, 4th in the 800 (2:00.72); Dom Padovano, 4th in the shot put (49-0.5 PR); Nick DeNuzzo, 6th in the 3200 (10:00.83); and the 4x400 team of Juwan Tisdale, Sathyakumar, Tyrin Fairman, and Cody Stephan that ran 3:34.21 to take 6th.

South Brunswick had many strong performances Monday night at the Varsity Classic in New York.
For the girls, the 4x800 team ran 9:39.7 to break their own indoor school and county record! The team of Jessica Puchalski, Cayla Del Piano, Joy Spriggs, and Sophia Ginez finished 8th in the competitive race but lowered the record by over 3 seconds!
Del Piano, Puchalski, Ginez, and Alicia Osley also ran well in the Distance Medley relay, as their time of 12:20.4 placed them 3rd!
Also medaling for the Vikings was Mariah Browne, who jumped a PR of 36-9 for 5th in the triple jump.
For the boys, Brian Oni lowered his indoor school record in the 200 to 22.6, Derek Forthun tied his PR of 6-2 in the high jump with his 6th place finish, while Nick DeNuzzo (4:38 1600), Dom Padovano (48-8 shot put), and Juwan Tisdale (2:04 4x800 leg) all had notable personal bests.

A small number of Vikings competed at Lawrenceville's Poreda Invite, and many came home with outstanding performances!
The highlight was Mariah Browne's 18-10.75 winning performance in the long jump! The mark not only broke her own school and indoor county record, it is also the 7th best in NJ indoor history!
Also winning an event were Lauryn Strebeck, who captured the triple jump (35-2), and Jamie Thompson, who won the 55 Hurdles (8.56) and took 2nd in the long jump (17-9).
In addition, Melissa Dardani in the 55 (7.61) and Amanda Smilgis in the pole vault (9-0) were also both 2nd.
For the boys, Willie Roberson took 3rd in the long jump with his PR of 21-0.25.

1/30/2010 GMC Championships 0 South Brunswick 0 Girls Win 4th Straight; Boys Finish 2nd!
South Brunswick performed well at the GMC Championships Saturday, as the girls ran away with their 4th straight title, and the boys finished 2nd! The girls scored in every event, had 3 individual champions, and piled up 91 points to go with 2 school records! The boys scored 41 points to finish 2nd behind Old Bridge, their best finish in 3 years!
On the girls' side, GMC titles were won by Alicia Osley in the 400 (60.72), Cayla Del Piano in the 1600 (5:22.03), and Amanda Smilgis in the first-ever indoor GMC pole vault (9-0)!
Finishing 2nd while shattering school records were Jamie Thompson in the 55 Hurdles (8.42) and Mariah Browne in the 55 (7.36)!
Also finishing 2nd was Sophia Ginez in the 800 (2:22.83), Ginelle Walker in the shot put (34-11), and the 4x400 team of Thompson, Janae Baker, Jamielyn Samper, and Osley that ran 4:10.73!
3rd place finishes were recorded by Jessica Puchalski in the 800 (2:24.32), Lyndsey Sample in the 3200 (11:46.11), Emily Skalko in the high jump (4-10), and Amber Brown in the shot put (34-7.25).
For the boys, Brian Oni ran 6.50 in the 55 dash to win while also shattering the school record!

South Brunswick had a good day at the Lavino Relays in Lawrenceville, highlighted by three girls' relay victories, an indoor school record on the boys' side!
For the girls, the tandem of Mariah Browne and Lauryn Strebeck swept the horizontal jumps! In the long jump, Browne (18-0) and Strebeck (15-9) jumped a combined 33-9 to break the 3 year old meet record, held by another Viking duo! In the triple jump, Browne (36-9) and Strebeck (34-8) combined to leap 71-5 for another victory!
Also placing first was the 4x200 team of Melissa Dardani, Alicia Osley, Browne, and Rachel Johnson that ran a season-best 1:46.7!
Second place finishes went to the shot put team of Ginelle Walker (32-6.5) and Amber Brown (31-7) that combined for a distance of 64-1.5, and the 4x800 team of Jessica Puchalski, Joy Spriggs, Jamielyn Samper, and Cayla Del Piano that ran a season-best 9:49.4.
For the boys, the highlight was an indoor school record in the sprint medley! The team of Brian Oni (22.7 200), Tyrin Fairman (24.1 200), Juwan Tisdale (52.6 400), and Kapil Sathyakumar (2:01.2 800) ran 3:40.5 to lower the old record, set in 2006, by almost 3 seconds! Their time also placed them 4th in the race.
The medal-winnning performances were turned in by the long jump team of Willie Roberson (19-9) and Nikhil Yerramilli (19-8.5) that finished 2nd with their distance of 39-5.5, and the high jump duo of Derek Forthun (6-0) and Dominick Padovano (5-8) that jumped 11-8 for another 2nd place finish.

1/13/2010 Millrose Games Trials 0 South Brunswick 0 4x400 School Record!
The Lady Vikings 4x400 competed Wednesday night at the New York Armory in the Millrose Games Trials and came home with a new indoor school record! The foursome of Jamie Thompson (60.6), Cayla Del Piano (59.3), Janae Baker (60.3), and Alicia Osley (59.4) ran 3:59.70 to lower the 4-year old record by almost 2 seconds! They finished 4th in a competitive race and missed qualifying for the Millrose Games by less than 1.5 seconds!

1/9/2010 GMC Relays 0 South Brunswick 0 Lady Vikings Win 3rd Straight GMC Relays Title!
The Lady Vikings rolled to their 3rd straight indoor GMC Relays title, scoring 74 points out of a possible 80! The team won 5 of the 8 varsity events, and placed 2nd in the other 3! The team was sparked by 2 meet record performances in the first 2 events, the distance medley and the shuttle hurdles, with the hurdle team also setting a new school record!
The boys team scored 25 points to post a 3rd place overall finish!
The Distance Medley was the first of 5 straight victories on the track for the Lady Vikings, as the team of Lyndsey Sample (1200), Jessica Puchalski (400), Julie Curcio (800), and Cayla DelPiano (1600) ran 13:02.17 to shave 22 seconds off the their own meet record set last year! Right after the DMR, the shuttle hurdle team of Jamie Thompson, Rachel Johnson, Jen O'Laughlin, and Lauryn Strebeck ran 32.82 to break the meet and school record!
Other victories on the track were recorded by the 4x200 team of Melissa Dardani, Alicia Osley, Mariah Browne, and Johnson that ran 1:48.62; the 4x800 team of Jamielyn Samper, Amanda Smilgis, DelPiano, and Joy Spriggs that ran 10:15.55; and the Sprint Medley team of Osley (400), Browne (200), Dardani (200), and Sophia Ginez that ran a near meet-record of 4:15.23.
Second place finishes were turned in by the high jump team of Brooke Sassman and Emily Skalko that combined for 9-6; the shot put team of Amber Brown and Ginelle Walker that threw 65-2.5 combined; and the 4x400 team of Samper, Thompson, Shadae Riggins, and Janae Baker that ran 4:14.97.
The girls also finished 1st in the novice 4x800 and 2nd in the novice 4x200!
For the boys, the top performance was the 2nd place high jump tandem of Derek Forthun and Dominick Padovano.
The team also had two strong 3rd place finishes from the sprint medley and distance medley teams. The sprint medley team of Juwan Tisdale (400), Brian Oni (200), Nikhil Yerramilli (200), and Kapil Sathyakumar (800) ran 3:45.26 in a tight and exciting race, while the distance medley team of Sathyakumar (1200), Tisdale (400), Kotey Ashie (800), and Nick DeNuzzo (1600) ran 11:05.59 to earn their 3rd place finish.
In addition, the boys also won the novice 4x800!

South Brunswick came back a day after their season opener with many solid performances at the postponed Merli Invitational in Toms River!
On the girls side, two athletes came home with first place finishes, Jamie Thompson and Lyndsey Sample! Thompson won the 55 Hurdles with a PR of 8.79, while Sample ran a near PR of 11:53.61 to capture the 3200!
Also placing in the top-6 were the following athletes: Mariah Browne, 2nd in the 55 (7.55); Amanda Smilgis, 4th in the pole vault (8-6); Rachel Johnson, 5th in the 55 (7.75); Lauryn Strebeck, 5th in the 55 Hurdles (9.28); Jessica Puchalski, 6th in the 400 (63.67); and the 2nd place 4x400 team of Thompson, Janae Baker, Jamielyn Samper, and Alicia Osley that ran 4:14.85.
For the boys, Brian Oni was the top finisher with his 3rd place time of 6.67 in the 55!
Also placing were Nick DeNuzzo, 5th in the 3200 with a PR of 10:01.65; Dominick Padovano, 5th in the shot put (44-5.75); and Derek Forthun, tied for 6th in the high jump (5-10).

12/29/2009 Holiday Relay Carnival 0 South Brunswick 0 Vikings Open Up with Solid Showing!
The Vikings finally opened their winter season on Tuesday at the Holiday Relay Carnival in Jersey City. Many athletes came home with medals for their top-6 performances!
In the boys varsity events, the top place was turned in by Brian Oni, who ran 23.5 to take 2nd in the 200!
Also placing in the varsity events were Nick DeNuzzo, 6th in the 1600 with a PR of 4:45; the 3rd place 4x800 team of Kapil Sathyakumar, Kotey Ashie, Derrick Pee, and Stephen Ragany that ran 8:41.4; and the 4th place shot put tandem of Dominick Padovano (43-7) and Derek Forthun (40-0).
In girls varsity events, Sophia Ginez won the 1600 by a large margin with her time of 5:20.7!
Also placing top-6 in individual events was Jamie Thompson, 2nd in her first-ever 55 Hurdles race (8.8), and Lauryn Strebeck, 5th in the 55 Hurdles (9.4).
In the relay events, 2 teams placed 2nd: the 4x400 team of Thompson, Kyra Madden, Joy Spriggs, and Baker that ran 4:21.4; and the 4x800 team of Ginez, Jamielyn Samper, Jenni Smilgis, and Amanda Smilgis that ran 10:14.6.
Also placing was the 3rd place 4x200 team of Melissa Dardani, Alicia Osley, Janae Baker, and Mariah Browne that ran 1:52.6, and the 6th place shot put team of Ginelle Walker (32-2.5) and Amber Brown (31-7).
