6/3/2009 Meet of Champions 0 South Brunswick 0 Banner Night at Meet of Champs!

The Lady Vikings had an impressive showing Thursday night at the Meet of Champions, as 3 athletes combined for 4 medals! The highlights included a school record, a class record, and the 3rd fastest 4x400 relay in school history!

The top finish on the day was Mariah Browne's 2nd place finish in the long jump! Her 3rd round jump of 17-10 led the competition until the 6th and final round. The other major highlight was Sophia Ginez cutting over 5 seconds off her 1600 PR to place 5th in an ultra-competitive race. Her time of 4:53.15 also lowered her own school record!

Also medaling was Jamie Thompson who took 7th in the long jump (17-4.25) and 8th in the 400 hurdles (62.77) in a time that was just off her personal best.

In the discus, Amber Brown threw a PR for the 3rd straight meet, and her mark of 117-1 also broke the sophomore class record! She finished 10th, an improvement of 10 spots from her pre-meet seed.

The 4x400 team of Alicia Osley (60.3), Janae Baker (60.7), Jamielyn Samper (59.9 PR), and Cayla Del Piano (57.9 PR) ran a time of 3:59.01, a season-best by nearly 3 seconds and the 3rd fastest in school history! Their time placed 17th in a competitive field.

Also performing well was Lauryn Strebeck, whose mark of 35-3.5 in the triple jump placed her 11th.

5/30/2009 Group IV Championships 0 South Brunswick 0 9 Advance to MOC!

The Vikings had a record-breaking weekend at the Group IV Championships, as the team scored 31 points to finish in a tie for 3rd place, the highest finish since the team joined Group IV! In addition, all 9 Vikings who competed advanced to the Meet of Champions, another team record!

Leading the way for the Lady Vikings were Mariah Browne and Sophia Ginez. Browne captured the state title in the long jump with her leap of 18-3.25, an outdoor career best! Ranked 4th entering the meet, Browne's 2nd round jump turned out to be the winner! Ginez had the best state meet to date in her distinguished career, finishing 2nd in both the 1600 and 3200 with outstanding races! In the 1600 on Friday she ran 4:59.45, and she came back on Saturday to shatter her own school record in the 3200! Her time of 10:47.10 was her first time breaking 11 minutes outdoors, and marked a 12+ second improvement on her best all-time performance!

Also placing for the Vikings was Jamie Thompson, who went 17-4.25 in the long jump to place 4th, and Lauryn Strebeck, who jumped an outdoor career best 35-11 to take 6th in the triple jump, an improvement of 7 places from her pre-meet seed! Thompson will also advance to the MOC in the 400 Hurdles, where her 8th place mark of 63.74 will earn her a wildcard.

Advancing to the MOC as wildcards are Amber Brown, who threw a PR 112-7 to place 7th in the discus, and the 4x400 team of Alicia Osley (59.8), Janae Baker (60.8), Jamielyn Samper (61.4), and Cayla Del Piano (59.5 PR) that ran a season-best 4:01.70 to finish 10th.

5/23/2009 South Brunswick 72 Central Jersey IV Sectionals 56 Central Jersey Champs!

The Lady Vikings won the ultra-competitive Central Jersey Group IV Sectional Championship on Saturday, as they scored 72 points to surpass Jackson, who was 2nd with 56! It was the team's 2nd Sectional title in the past 3 years, and the 3rd in school history!

The team got off to a great start on Friday, with Jamie Thompson and Sophia Ginez sparking the team to a 41 point first-place showing after day one. Thompson won the 400 Hurdles with a late burst in 62.69, a time that broke the junior class record and nearly the school record as well! She also finished 2nd in the long jump with a huge PR of 18-2.5, over 1 foot better than her previous best!

Ginez also won a sectional title with an impressive performance in the 1600. Her time of 4:58.43 won by nearly 5 seconds, and was a PR and new school record!

Also on day one, Cayla Del Piano had a big race in the 1600, finishing 3rd in 5:04.89 to set a new PR, and Mariah Browne finished 3rd in the long jump (17-8.5) and 6th in the 100 (12.79).

On Saturday, the team received another great performance from Ginez, who finished 2nd in the 3200 (11:02.11, outdoor school record), and 3rd in the 800 (2:16.44) with a new school record!

Trish Langone finished 2nd in the javelin with a season-best 116-5, and Amber Brown was 4th in the discus with a PR of 108-11.

Also scoring points and advancing to states were triple jumpers Browne (35-7 5th) and Lauryn Strebeck (35-4.25 6th); Del Piano in the 800 (2:19.61 6th); and the 4x400 team of Thompson (60.7), Del Piano (60.6), Janae Baker (61.4), and Alicia Osley (59.4) that placed 6th in 4:02.36.

Other notable performances over the 2 days: All 4 seniors who competed set or tied PRs in their last high school meet - Stephanie Greco (32-3.25 shot put); Kim McGrath (12:44.21 3200); Maria Biondo (8-0 pole vault); and Sharon Liu (33-5.25 triple jump).

Also, Jenni Smilgis ran a big PR of 5:13.76, which placed her 9th in the 1600, and a PR of 2:25.40 in the 800; Alicia Osley ran a PR 59.44 to place 8th in the 400; Rachel Johnson ran a PR 26.08 in the 200 to finish 7th; Kyra Madden ran a big PR of 26.46 and finished 10th in the 200; and Chloe Hall finished 7th in the discus with a near PR of 105-1.

5/18/2009 East Coast Relays 0 South Brunswick 0 First-ever East Coast Relays Winner!

South Brunswick had a successful night at the competitive East Coast Relays in Morristown, as they medaled in all 5 events in which they competed!

The highlight was the 4x100 relay team that became the first Viking running relay to win an event at this historic meet! The team of Rachel Johnson, Alicia Osley, Janae Baker, and Mariah Browne ran 49.57 to win by a margin of .002!

In second place was the javelin team of Trish Langone (112-1) and Lara Delistovich (108-1 PR) that combined for 220-2.

The 4x200 team of Johnson (26.3), Baker (26.6), Osley (26.5), and Browne (25.6) ran 1:45.23 to finish 4th, and the discus team of Chloe Hall (106-8 PR) and Amber Brown (103-1) combined for 209-9 to place 5th.

Rounding out the medal winners was the high jump tandem of Brooke Sassman (5-0) and Emily Skalko (4-10) that jumped 9-10 to finish in a 7th place tie.

5/16/2009 South Brunswick 115 GMC Championships 57 Fourth Straight GMC Title!

South Brunswick won its 4th straight GMC championship on Saturday, as it scored a total of 115 points to beat runner-up Old Bridge, who scored 57! 17 athletes contributed to the scoring, and the team scored points in 13 of the 16 events!

Sophia Ginez led a dominating distance performance with her victories in the 1600 (5:07.01) and the 3200 (11:38.94). It was also the 3rd straight year she won both events at the GMC meet!

Other individual GMC Champions were Amber Brown, who won the discus with a PR of 107-3, and Mariah Browne, who jumped 17-8 in the long jump! Both athletes also scored in 2 events, as Brown took 6th in the shot put with a big PR (34-10), and Browne finished 4th in the triple jump (34-11).

In the distance events, Cayla Del Piano had two 2nd place finishes, the first one coming in the 3200 (11:39.17), and then later in the 800 (2:18.97).

Also placing in multiple events were Jamie Thompson, who took 2nd in the long jump (16-4.5), 3rd in the 400 hurdles (64.05), and ran a leg on the 2nd place 4x400 team, and Alicia Osley, who was 6th in the 400 (59.56 PR), and ran anchor on the 2nd place relay!

Other distance runners who contributed to the 45 point total in the 800, 1600, and 3200 were Jenni Smilgis, 3rd in the 1600 (5:21.59); Joy Spriggs, 6th in the 800 (2:28.93); Lyndsey Sample, 6th in the 3200 (12:11.20); and Ashley Edwards, 6th in the 1600 (5:36.53).

5/12/2009 South Brunswick 90 Woodbridge 50 Red Division Champs!

The Lady Vikings defeated Woodbridge on Tuesday by a score of 90-50 to finish undefeated (7-0) and win the Red Division for the 3rd straight year! There were many great performances that fueled the victory.

Field event victories were recorded by Mariah Browne in the long jump (18-1.5) and triple jump (35-8.25); Emily Skalko in the pole vault (8-0); Brooke Sassman in the high jump (5-2 =PR); Amber Brown in the discus (94-7); and Trish Langone in the javelin (114-3).

On the track, Joy Spriggs won the 800 (2:29.6), Sophia Ginez won the 1600 (5:19), Cayla Del Piano won the 3200 (11:42.2), Lauryn Strebeck won the 100 Hurdles (15.4 PR), and the 4x400 team of Matilda Owirodu, Jamie Thompson, Kyra Madden, and Jamielyn Samper also finished first with a time of 4:24.3.

Also of note, 2 freshman class records were broken. Alicia Osley ran 59.8 in the 400, and Savannah Barton jumped 7-6 in the pole vault to set new frosh standards!

5/8/2009 Metuchen Frosh/Soph Meet 0 South Brunswick 0 Many Medals at Frosh/Soph Meet!

The Lady Vikings had a great evening at Metuchen's Freshman/Sophomore meet, as many athletes earned medals for their great performances!

In the freshman javelin, Alyssa McFarlane finished first with a throw of 57-5!

On the track, the all-freshman DMR placed 2nd in the combined frosh/soph division! The team of Melanie Huen (4:17 1200), Kyra Madden (62.8 400), Julia Bossert (2:42 800), and Kayla Noll (5:43) ran 13:46.2.

In the freshman 200, Madden placed 2nd in 27.2, while Kylie Plummer (27.9) and Jackie Marciniak (28.2) finished 3rd and 4th, with all three runners setting PRs!

In the sophomore 200, Clara Appia ran a PR of 27.7 to finish 3rd!

The team closed out the night with 2 all-frosh relay teams earning medals! The team of Mandi Medell (67.1), April Bellizio (71.9), Monet Hall (67.8), and Marciniak (67.4) ran 4:34.1 to finish 4th, with all 4 runners setting PRs. The team of Dani Resnick (66.3), Alyssa Mora (71.7), Jabria Jennerette (69.6), and Taylor Eutsey (67.5) ran 4:35.1 to finish 5th!

5/2/2009 Rowan University Open 0 South Brunswick 0 Relays Shine at Rowan!

South Brunswick travelled to south Jersey for the Rowan Invite and came home with many medals and outstanding performances!

The highlight was the wire-to-wire victory by the 4x800 team that ran 9:31.24 to shatter both the school record by 12 seconds and the Middlesex County record by 5 seconds! The team of Cayla Del Piano (2:17.8 PR), Jenni Smilgis (2:27.9), Joy Spriggs (2:30.3), and Sophia Ginez (2:15.0 PR) dominated the field with a 20 second victory! For Del Piano, Smilgis, and Ginez, it was their 3rd county record in the space of 10 days!

Three relay teams finished in 2nd place against competitive fields: the 4x100 team of Rachel Johnson, Alicia Osley, Melissa Dardani, and Mariah Browne ran 49.51; the 4x200 team of Dardani (26.3), Janae Baker (26.7), Browne (26.0), and Johnson (25.7) ran 1:44.94; and the 4x400 team of Jamie Thompson (62.1), Ginez (60.6 =PR), Baker (59.4 PR), and Osley (59.7 PR) that ran 4:02.06!

4/29/2009 South Brunswick 138 GMC Relays 58 Fourth Straight GMC Relays Title!

The Lady Vikings captured their 4th straight County Relays title on Wednesday by scoring a commanding 138 points to outdistance their closest rivals by 80 points! The team won 7 events, finished 2nd in 7, and placed 3rd in the other 2 events, while 30 athletes participated in the victory! The team also broke 3 meet records, 2 school records, and 1 county record over the course of the 2-day meet!

On day two, the sprint medley team of Janae Baker (60.1 400), Rachel Johnson (25.5 200), Melissa Dardani (26.2 200), and Sophia Ginez (2:18.8 800) ran 4:10.5 for the victory, and broke the school and meet records set 2 years ago!

Also breaking a meet record on Wednesday was the victorious distance medley team of Jenni Smilgis (3:58.0 1200), Kyra Madden (63.0 400 PR), Angelica Villena (2:37.8 800 PR), and Cayla Del Piano (5:09.5 1600) that ran 12:48.1 to break the meet record set 26 years ago!

Other winning relays on day two were the long jump team of Jamie Thompson (16-0), Lauryn Strebeck (15-9.75), and Mariah Browne (15-9) that combined to jump 47-6.75, and the 4x400 team of Thompson (59.4 PR), Alicia Osley (61.9), Joy Spriggs (61.9 PR), and Jamielyn Samper (61.7) that ran a season-best of 4:04.9.

2nd place finishes on day two went to the 4x800 team of Joy Spriggs (2:27), Samper (2:29), Laura Calderone (2:36 PR), and Ashley Edwards (2:31 PR) that ran 10:03.6; the shuttle hurdle team of Sharon Liu (16.3), Jen O'Laughlin (16.8), June McQueen 916.3), and Lauryn Strebeck (16.3) that ran a season-best 1:05.7; the 4x100 team of Johnson, Osley, Dardani, and Browne that ran a season-best 49.1; and the javelin team of Trish Langone (100-11), Lara Delistovich (87- ), and Stephanie Greco (75- ) that combined for 264-7.

The school record had stood for 11 years and the meet/county records were 6 years old.

In the field, the discus team of Amber Brown (106-8 PR), Stephanie Greco (91-9 PR), and Chloe Hall (91-1) combined to win with a total mark of 289-6, and the triple jump team of Lauryn Strebeck (34-3.75), Mariah Browne (33-8.25), and Sharon Liu (31-6.75) jumped 99-6.75 for the victory!

Finishing in 2nd but breaking the school record by .1 was the 3x400 Hurdle team of Jamie Thompson (63.6 PR), Jamielyn Samper (69.2), and Laura Calderone (73.4) that combined to run 3:26.2!

Also in 2nd was the high jump team of Brooke Sassman (5-0), Emily Skalko (4-10), and Jen O'Laughlin (4-8) that jumped 14-6, and the 4x200 team of Melissa Dardani (25.9), Janae Baker (26.2), Alicia Osley (26.0), and Rachel Johnson (25.9) that ran 1:43.9.

4/23/2009 Penn Relays 0 South Brunswick 0 Fourth at Penn Relays!

The Lady Vikings Distance Medley Relay team made school history Thursday night at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, as they finished 4th in the Penn Relays Championship of America race! It was the first time a Viking foursome had qualified for Penn Relays in that event, and their time of 12:09.77 also lowered their own county record! The team of Cayla Del Piano (3:35.5 1200 PR), Janae Baker (59.8 400 PR), Jennifer Smilgis (2:27.3 800), and Sophia Ginez (5:06.9 1600) ran near the front the entire race to improve on their pre-meet #8 seed!

Also faring well on Thursday was the 4x100 team of Rachel Johnson, Alicia Osley, Melissa Dardani, and Mariah Browne that won their heat in a season-best time of 49.71!

The 4x400 team of Jamie Thompson (63.4), Jamielyn Samper (63.0), Joy Spriggs (64.7), and Alicia Osley (60.0) ran 4:11.20 to finish 6th in their heat.

South Brunswick had a great day at the Raider Relays in Hillsborough, as they took full full advantage of the nice weather by winning 5 varsity relays! The team also won one novice relay, and medaled in every event they entered!

First place finishes on the track were recorded by the 4x100 team of Rachel Johnson, Alicia Osley, Melissa Dardani, and Mariah Browne that ran 50.5; the 4x200 team of Dardani, Janae Baker, Osley, and Johnson that ran 1:45.2; the 4x400 team of Jamie Thompson (64.6), Dardani (63.8), Joy Spriggs (62.0), and Osley (60.3) that ran 4:10.6; and the Distance Medley team of Sophia Ginez (3:40 1200), Baker (64.6 400), Jenni Smilgis (2:30 800), and Cayla Del Piano (5:10 1600) that ran 12:26.3 to lower their own school and county outdoor record!

The Lady Vikings stormed to their 4th victory of the season, beating East Brunswick by a score of 101-39 on Thursday! The team won 12 of the 16 events for another impressive performance. In the field, victories were recorded by Chloe Hall in the discus (101-10), Brooke Sassman in the high jump (4-10), Amanda Smilgis in the pole vault (8-0), Mariah Browne in the triple jump (34-4.5), and Jamie Thompson in the long jump (15-11.25). The Vikings had a strong day at the Colts Neck Relays, as they won 3 varsity relays and placed top-3 in all but one event they entered! Leading the way with a new outdoor school and county record was the distance medley team of Cayla Del Piano (3:47 1200), Janae Baker (60.9 400), Jenni Smilgis (2:29 800), and Sophia Ginez (5:12 1600) that ran 12:30.33 to knock 12 seconds off the old standard! Also winning, and setting a meet record in the process, was the long jump duo of Mariah Browne (16-6) and Jamie Thompson (15-5) that combined for 31-11!
