2/26/2008 Eastern States 0 South Brunswick 0 Vikings Close Season With 3 Records!
At the Eastern States Championships on Tuesday night the Vikings ended their indoor season with 3 events improving their own records!
For the girls, Sophia Ginez finished 8th in the 800 with a time of 2:18.86, a time that improved her own school record and also set a new indoor Middlesex County record! Her performance was .11 under the 6-year old standard.
Mariah Browne also finished 8th, jumping 17-3 in the long jump, a mark that improved her freshman school record!
For the boys, the 4X400 team of Josh Checo (53.0), Mike Ricketts (50.3 PR), John Liptak (52.3 PR), and Zack Ryan (52.2) improved their own school record once again, running 3:27.88 to take 11th place!

2/23/2008 Meet of Champions 0 South Brunswick 0 Medal-winning day at MOC!
On Saturday in Toms River, Sophia Ginez became the first Viking girl to medal at an indoor Meet of Champions since 1999! Her time of 5:06.64 in the 1600 placed her fourth, and took over 3 seconds off her own indoor school record! She also improved her pre-meet seeding by 10 places!
The boys 4X400 team of Zack Ryan (52.7), Josh Checo (53.0), John Liptak (52.5), and Mike Ricketts (51.8) was slightly off their best, but still managed a respectable 14th place with their solid time of 3:30.09.
2/16/2008 Group IV State Championships 0 South Brunswick 0 5 Move on to MOC!
At the Group IV meet on Saturday 5 Vikings qualified for the Meet of Champions next week by virtue of their top-6 finishes, while 2 other athletes had notable PR performances!
For the boys, the 4X400 team of Josh Checo (52.8 PR), Mike Ricketts (51.7 PR), John Liptak (52.7), and Zack Ryan (52.1) combined to run 3:29.44, which was good for 6th place! The time also took another second off the indoor school record that has now been broken or tied 4 times this year!
For the girls, Sophia Ginez finished 4th in the 1600 with a time of 5:09.83 to qualify for the MOC!
Other strong performances from the girls were turned in by Jamie Thompson, who improved her PR by over a second with her time of 60.32 in the 400, and Lyndsey Sample, who ran a PR of 12:02.18 in the 3200!

2/10/2008 Central Jersey Sectionals 0 South Brunswick 0 12 Advance to States!
The Vikings had a good day at the first-ever indoor Central Jersey Sectionals, sending a total of 12 athletes to the Group IV State Meet next weekend!
For the girls, 8 athletes advanced and combined for 29 points, which placed the team 5th. Leading the way with two 2nd place finishes was Sophia Ginez, who ran 2:19.53 in the 800 and 5:09.85 in the 1600! The 800 time also lowered her own indoor school record! Tying for second in the high jump was Brooke Sassman, who cleared a height of 4-10 to tie her PR!
The girls also had 6 6th place finishes: Melissa Dardani in the 55 (7.68); Jamie Thompson in the 400 (61.47 PR); Jenni Smilgis in the 1600 (5:20.85, 11 second PR); Lyndsey Sample in the 3200 (12:03.65 PR); Stephanie Greco in the shot put (32-2.25 PR); and Emily Skalko in the high jump (4-8).
For the boys, the highlight was a 2nd place finish by the 4X400 team in 3:30.46, a time which also broke the indoor school record set this year! The team ran in the order of Josh Checo (54.1), Mike Ricketts (51.8 PR), John Liptak (52.4 PR), and Zack Ryan (51.9).
The other top-6 finish for the boys was turned in by Checo, who placed 5th in the 55 Hurdles with a PR of 8.15.
Danny Boyle also turned in a nice race, running a PR of 4:42.94 to place 10th in the 1600.

The Vikings had a nice night at the Rebel Shot Put meet in Howell on Tuesday, winning both freshman divisions! For the boys, Dominick Padovano threw a near-PR of 43-1 for the win, a mark that broke the previous meet record by over 4 feet! For the girls, Amber Brown won the freshman division with a PR of 29-11! Also medaling for the girls was Ginelle Walker, who finished 4th in the sophomore division with a PR toss of 32-1!

2/4/2008 Varsity Classic 0 South Brunswick 0 Records Fall at Varsity Classic!
South Brunswick had a great showing at the Varsity Classic on Monday, breaking several records and setting many new personal bests!
For the girls, the distance medley team broke the school record plus the indoor Middlesex county record! The team of Jenni Smilgis (3:53.3 1200 PR), Jamie Samper (63.3 400), Stephanie Rodriguez (2:32.6 800), and Sophia Ginez (5:10.6 1600) ran 12:39.7 to finish 6th and shatter the 6-year old county indoor record by 4 seconds!
Also for the girls, Mariah Browne finished 3rd in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.25, a mark that broke the 25-year old freshman class record!
For the boys, Mike Ricketts broke a 3-year old indoor school record with his 200 time of 23.0!
In addition, the 4X400 team of Ricketts (54.3), John Liptak (52.9 PR), Josh Checo (52.6 PR), and Zack Ryan (51.7 PR) tied the indoor record set earlier this year with their time of 3:31.5.
Other strong races were turned in by the following athletes: Lyndsey Sample, who ran a 10 second 1600 PR of 5:37.2; Rachel Johnson, who ran a big PR of 27.2 in the 200; Shadae Riggins, who ran a PR of 63.5 in the 400; Danny Boyle, who ran a PR 4:48 in the 1600; and the boys 4X800 team of Jimmy Maloney (2:06.8), Brian Haydon (2:06.4), Steven Lewis (2:03.8), and John Liptak (2:02.1) that ran a season-best 8:19.1, with all 4 runners setting indoor PRs!

2/1/2008 South Brunswick 64 GMC Championships 36 Girls Win 2nd Straight County Title!
The Viking girls won the team title for the second straight year at the GMC Championships in Jersey City on Friday night, scoring 64 points and rolling to a 28 point victory! East Brunswick and JP Stevens were the closest rivals, scoring 36 and 34 points respectively. The team placed in all 9 events, including at least 2 athletes in 6 of those events, and had 15 people who contributed to the scoring!
Leading the way was double event winner Sophia Ginez, who captured the 800 (2:20.69) and the 1600 (5:31.08) by large margins! Her 800 time also broke a 24-year old indoor school record!
Finishing in 3rd was Lyndsey Sample, who ran 12:11.65 in the 3200, and Jen O'Laughlin and Brooke Sassman, who tied for 3rd in the high jump with personal bests of 4-10! The 4X400 team of Jamie Samper (64.9), Stephanie Rodriguez (65.4), Falen Watson (65.4), and Jamie Thompson (64.1) also took 3rd.
Picking up 4th place finishes were Jenni Smilgis in the 1600 (5:39.96) and 3200 (12:13.03 PR) and Mariah Browne in the 55 (7.54 PR).
5th place finishes went to Melissa Dardani in the 55 (7.55 PR), Watson in the 55 Hurdles (9.47 PR), Ginelle Walker in the shot put (31-9.75, PR of 3 feet), and Emily Skalko, who tied for 5th at 4-6 in the high jump.
Rounding out the scoring were 6th place finishes from Thompson in the 400 (62.45), Lauryn Strebeck in the 55 Hurdles (9.47 PR), and Stephanie Greco in the shot put (31-7.5 PR).
Other athletes who just missed placing or who turned in notable PRs were Amanda Smilgis (5:45.46, 1600 PR of 12 seconds, 7th place); Rodriguez (9.47 55 Hurdles PR, 7th place); Amber Brown (29-10, 2 foot shot put PR, 9th place); Simone Hill (7.90 55 PR, 9th place); Janae Baker (65.02 400 PR).
The Viking boys scored 21 points to finish in 6th place overall.
The top finish for the boys was Jaron Baker's 2nd in the 55 Dash (6.65 PR).
In the 400, Zack Ryan ran a PR 52.22 to take 3rd, while John Liptak finished 5th in the 800 at 2:05.14, and Mike Ricketts took 6th in the 400 at 53.65.
The 3 athletes just mentioned were also part of the 4X400 team that took 4th, running in the order of Ricketts (54.4), Liptak (53.1), Josh Checo (53.8), and Ryan (53.0) for a total time of 3:34.53.
Failing to place but turning in notable marks were the shot putters: Dominick Padovano (42-6, 9th place), Wes Thomas (41-9 PR, 10th place), and Dan Zwiren (41-5 PR, 12th place). Finishing in 7th and 8th place in the 55 Hurdles were Checo (8.22) and Ryan (8.33, but 8.19 in the trials).

1/22/2008 FDU Jumps Meet 0 South Brunswick 0 Great Jumps at FDU!
The Vikings had a productive night at the FDU Field Festival, earning 3 first place finishes plus 4 other medals for top-3 finishes!
The highlights were two massive personal bests in the long jump for Jamie Thompson and Mariah Browne. Thompson won the varsity division with a leap of 17-1 on her last attempt, while Browne captured the frosh/novice division with a jump of 17-0.75! Both jumps were personal bests by 1 foot!
Also winning the frosh/novice division was Brooke Sassman, who jumped 4-8 in the high jump! Finishing just behind her was Jen O'Laughlin, who also jumped 4-8 but took 2nd on misses!
Finishing in 3rd for the girls was Lauryn Strebeck, who jumped 34-0.5 in the varsity triple jump, and Emily Skalko, who cleared 4-8 in the varsity high jump.
Placing for the boys was Dominick Padovano, who cleared 5-4 to take 2nd in the frosh/novice high jump.

The Vikings had a great day at Lawrenceville Prep's Lavino Relays on Saturday, coming home with 3 school records and 7 sets of medals for top-3 performances!
For the boys, 3 relay teams set or tied new indoor school records! The shuttle hurdle team of Josh Checo (7.6), Zack Ryan (7.5), TJ Taikina (8.2), and Matt Kirbos (7.9) finished in 1st place with a time of 31.2, a time that broke the school record set last year!
Finishing in 2nd and breaking another school record was the 4X400 team of Mike Ricketts (52.9), Ryan (52.1), Checo (53.2), and Kris Raghavan (53.4) that ran 3:31.5 to finish 2 seconds under the 2-year old record!
Also finishing in 2nd and tying a 13-year old school record was the 4X200 team of Ricketts (23.1), Jaron Baker (23.9), Raghavan (23.9), and Kirbos (23.4) that ran 1:34.1!
The boys also had 6th place finishes from the 4X800 team of Brian Haydon (2:08), Jimmy Maloney (2:06), Steven Lewis (2:07), and John Liptak (2:05) that ran 8:28, and the sprint medley team of Baker (23.5 200), Shri Kamat (24.3 200), Lewis (55.0 400), and Liptak (2:04 800) that ran 3:47.5.
The girls also had a strong day, earning 4 sets of medals and performing well in many events.
The top places were 2nd place finishes by the sprint medley team of Melissa Dardani (26.6 200), Simone Hill (27.1 200), Jamie Thompson (64.2 400), and Sophia Ginez (2:21.7) that ran 4:19.7, and the long jump tandem of Thompson and Mariah Browne, both of whom jumped identical marks of 16-0.5.

The Vikings came home Friday with many medals and other solid performances after competing in the Jersey City Development Meet.
For the girls, the top performance was the freshman 4X200 team's 1:57.7 1st place finish! The lineup consisted of Rachel Johnson (28.2), Yasmine Burd (29.8), Laura Calderone (30.9), and Shadae Riggins (28.7).
Finishing in 2nd for the girls was Johnson in the frosh 60 meter dash with a time of 8.2.
Also placing for the girls was Amber Brown, who took 4th in the frosh 55 hurdles (10.7) and 6th in the novice shot put (27-4), and the frosh 4X200 'B' team of Jen O'Laughlin (31.2), Jenna Wandishin (31.9), Jean Choi (31.5), and Jackie King (32.1) that ran 2:06.8 to finish 5th.
For the boys, Anthony Parel was 2nd in the frosh 60 (7.6), and was part of the 6th place novice 4X200 team of Vaughn Matthew (24.9), AJ Dramis (26.2), Heaton Kath (25.8), Parel (25.7) that ran 1:42.4.
Also placing for the boys was the novice 4X800 team of Andrew Sudran (2:15), Mathu Kumarasamy (2:15), Matt Kilbride (2:18), and Dan Medell (2:17) that took 3rd in 9:07; Wes Thomas, who took 3rd in the novice shot put (37-9); Jashan Singh, who took 4th in the novice shot put (37-2); Matthew, who was 5th in the novice 60 (7.5), and Pranav Somisetty, who was 6th in the frosh 55 hurdles (12.7).

The Vikings had a strong day at the Group IV State Relays on Saturday, earning 4 sets of medals and setting 1 indoor school record!
For the girls, the top performance was the 3rd place finish of the sprint medley team! The lineup of Jamie Thompson (63.3 400), Melissa Dardani (26.6 200), Simone Hill (27.6 200), and Sophia Ginez (2:21.1 indoor 800 PR) ran a quick 4:18.82, despite competing in the 3rd of 5 heats!
Finishing in 4th was the distance medley team of Jenni Smilgis (3:58.3 1200 PR), Jamie Samper (66.6 400), Stephanie Rodriguez (2:36.2 800), and Ginez (5:06.7 indoor 1600 PR) that ran 12:48.05! Their time also broke a 10-year old indoor school record by over 2 seconds!
Rounding out the girls scoring was the 6th place 4X200 team of Dardani (27.5), Mariah Browne (27.9), Thompson (27.4), and Hill (27.5) that ran 1:50.46!
For the boys, the top performance was the 6th place finish of the 4X800 team! The foursome of Steven Lewis (2:08.5), Brian Haydon (2:08.4 indoor PR), Jimmy Maloney (2:07.3 indoor PR), and John Liptak (2:03.7 indoor PR) combined to run 8:27.92.
The boys and girls team also combined for a 7th place (boys 4X200) and 3 8th place finishes (boys & girls high jump, girls shuttle hurdles) to just miss scoring in those events.

South Brunswick had many strong performances at the Hispanic Games Saturday at the NY Armory, a meet that was highlighted by two school records!
Leading the way for the boys was Matt Kirbos, who tied his own indoor school record in the pole vault with his 3rd place jump of 13-0!
For the girls, Sophia Ginez ran 5:11.59 for the Mile, a time which placed her 7th in the Invitational Section, and also broke the school record she set last year!
Other highlights for the boys included the 4X200 team that ran 1:34.89 to take a second off their season best. The lineup consisted of Kirbos (23.6), Zack Ryan (24.2), Mike Ricketts (23.1 PR), and Kyle Morse (23.9 PR). Dominick Padovano had a solid day, with PRs in the 55 hurdles at 8.81 and in the shot put with a toss of 41-5, as did Jon Bellizio with an indoor mile PR of 4:45.77.
Also turning in notable PRs for the girls was Jamie Thompson, who had times of 26.7 for her 4X200 leg and 61.66 for the 400, and Lyndsey Sample, who ran 5:47 for the mile.
Earning medals by virtue of winning their heat were the following runners- in the mile: Amanda Smilgis and Jithin Jacob; in the 400: Jamie Thompson, Rebecca Giampolo, Steven Lewis, and Nikhil Yerramilli.

The Vikings returned to the NY Armory on Thursday for the Holiday Classic and had many solid performances.
The girls team finished in 3rd place overall, and were led by two first-place finishes! The 4X800 team of Jenni Smilgis (2:32), Lyndsey Sample (2:41), Amanda Smilgis (2:40), and Sophia Ginez (2:27) ran 10:21.96 to win the sophomore division! Also winning their event was the freshman 4X200 team of Janae Baker (28.2), Rachel Johnson (29.1), Yasmine Burd (29.5), and Mariah Browne (28.3), who combined to run 1:55.16!
Also winning medals for the girls was the sophomore 4X200 team of Melissa Dardani (27.4), Lauryn Strebeck (27.7), Jamie Samper (29.0), and Jamie Thompson (27.2) that ran 1:51.54 to take 2nd!
Finally, the high jump tandem of Emily Skalko (4-8) and Jen O'Laughlin (4-6) combined for a 6th place tie!
For the boys, no relay teams placed, but there were some notable performances, including the varsity 4X200 team of Matt Kirbos (23.5), Josh Checo (24.5), Shri Kamat (24.5), and Mike Ricketts (23.4) that turned in a solid time of 1:35.93, which was 5th among NJ schools.

South Brunswick started their season on Saturday at the Bishop Loughlin Games in New York. The highlights for the Vikings were two indoor school record performances! For the boys, Matt Kirbos jumped 13-0 in the pole vault to break the record. His performance also tied him for 4th place. For the girls, Sophia Ginez ran 11:27.90 in the 2 mile to break the school record. She placed 11th in the competitive field. Many other Vikings shook off rust and competed well in their first meet of the new season.
