On Thursday at the Meet of Champions, Sophia Ginez ran an impressive race to finish 4th in the 1600 with a new PR of 4:59.38! Her time was an improvement of nearly 2 seconds on her own school record, and was her first time under the 5:00 barrier! Her 4th place was also an improvement of 15 spots from her pre-meet seed!

At the Group IV state meet over the weekend, Sophia Ginez advanced to the Meet of Champions in 2 events for the 2nd straight year! On Friday she finished 5th in the 1600 in 5:07.19, while on Saturday she ran 11:04.17 for another 5th place finish in the 3200!
Also at states, Emily Skalko tied her PR of 5-0 in the high jump to just miss qualifying as a wildcard, as did Trish Langone, who threw 110-2 in the javelin to place 9th.

5/24/2008 Central Jersey Sectionals 0 South Brunswick 0 5 Advance to States!
At the Central Jersey IV Sectionals at Hillsborough, the Lady Vikings advanced 5 athletes to next week's Group IV State meet!
Trish Langone was the lone winner for the Vikings, capturing the javelin with a PR throw of 117-11! Her victory also marked the 3rd straight year a Viking girl has won that event at sectionals.
Advancing in 3 events for the 2nd straight year was Sophia Ginez, who placed 3rd in the 800 (2:20.00), 4th in the 1600 (5:08.89), and 5th in a competitive 3200 (11:03.81). Her 3200 time beat her own school record set last year by nearly 10 seconds!
Also qualifying for states was Mariah Browne, who took 3rd in the triple jump (35-10.25); Emily Skalko, who tied for 4th in the high jump (5-0 PR); and Lara Delistovich, who took 6th in the javelin (98-4 PR).
Also of note was Rachel Johnson's 7th place time of 12.84 in the 100, a performance that tied her sister's 13-year old freshman class record!

The Vikings completed a perfect 7-0 season on Tuesday by defeating Perth Amboy 109-19 and North Brunswick 84.5-45.5! The win clinched the Red Division title for the 2nd straight year!
Shadae Riggins was a double winner against both teams, setting new PRs in the 400 (61.7) and triple jump (33-3) in the process!
Also finishing first against both teams were Rachel Johnson in the 100 (12.7 =PR); Ashley Edwards in the 1600 (5:42 PR); Kim McGrath in the 3200 (13:21); Mariah Browne in the long jump (16-5); Ginelle Walker in the shot put (30-7); Chloe Hall in the discus (87-3); and Trish Langone in the javelin (98-8).
Also of note was the 4X400 team of Janae Baker (62.1), Allie Ridley (67.8), Angelica Villena (65.9), and June McQueen (63.9) that ran 4:19.7 to beat Perth Amboy, with all 4 runners setting new PRs!

5/10/2008 South Brunswick 89 GMC Championships 52 Third Straight GMC Title!
The Vikings rolled to their 3rd straight GMC title on Saturday, scoring 89 points to beat 2nd place Monroe by 37 points! The team had scoring contributions from 15 different athletes who placed in 13 of the 16 events!
The girls were sparked by Sophia Ginez, who won both the 1600 (5:14.26) and the 3200 (11:31.53) for the 2nd straight year! She used strong surges in the last half of both races to win handily!
The other winner for the Vikings was Mariah Browne, who jumped 16-6 to capture the gold in the long jump!
Finishing a surprise 2nd in the discus was Chloe Hall, who threw a 6-foot PR of 104-11!
3rd place finishes were turned in by Trish Langone in the javelin (110-11), Lauryn Strebeck in the triple jump (34-8.5), Falen Watson in the 100 Hurdles (16.40), Lyndsey Sample in the 3200 (12:04.71), and Brooke Sassman, who tied for third in the high jump (4-10 =PR).
In 4th place was Emily Skalko in the pole vault (8-6 PR), Browne in the triple jump (34-5.5), Jamie Samper in the 800 (2:26.58 PR), and Strebeck in the 100 Hurdles (16.70 PR).
5th place finishes went to Jenni Smilgis in the 1600 (5:29.40), Rachel Johnson in the 100 (13.03, 12.95 in trials), and the 4X400 team of Samper (63.4), Stephanie Rodriguez (62.3), Shadae Riggins (61.8), and Simone Hill (61.6 PR) that ran 4:09.29.
The final scoring place for the Vikings was Samper's 67.71 6th place finish in the 400 Hurdles.

Event winners for the Vikings were Jamie Samper in the 400 Hurdles (70.0), Melissa Dardani in the 100 (12.6 PR) and 200 (26.6), Janae Baker in the 400 (62.5), Falen Watson in the 100 Hurdles (16.4), Lauryn Strebeck in the triple jump (35-4 PR), Chloe Hall in the discus (98-9 PR), and Emily Skalko in the high jump (4-10 =PR) and tied for first in the pole vault with Maria Biondo (both 8-0 PRs). The Viking freshmen stole the show at the Bernards Invitational on Saturday, as five of them combined for six top-6 finishes!
The biggest highlights were turned in by Mariah Browne, who went 36-2 in the triple jump for the win and 17-5.5 in the long jump to take 2nd! Both marks also shattered her own frosh class records!
Other freshmen performing well were Rachel Johnson, who took 3rd in the 200 (26.83); Brooke Sassman, who placed 3rd in the high jump (4-10 =PR); Chloe Hall, who was 6th in the discus (95-9 PR); and Shadae Riggins, who ran to a 6th place finish in the 400 (62.90).
Other strong showings were turned in by Trish Langone, who placed 2nd in the javelin (108-5 PR); Lauryn Strebeck, who was 3rd in the triple jump (34-2.25); Emily Skalko, who tied for 4th in the high jump (4-10 =PR); Falen Watson, who was 5th in the 100 Hurdles (16.71); and Melissa Dardani, who took 6th in the 200 (27.06).

The Lady Vikings stormed to their 3rd straight GMC Relays title on Wednesday, finishing the 2-day meet with 130 points to outdistance their nearest rival by 70 points! The team won 8 of the 16 events, finished 2nd in 4 others, and placed in the top-4 in all 16!
On day one, the Vikings were led by the following event winners: on the track, the 4X1600 team of Jenni Smilgis (5:41), Lyndsey Sample (5:45), Amanda Smilgis (5:52), and Sophia Ginez (5:19) ran 22:37.4; in the pole vault, Maria Biondo (8-0 PR), Emily Skalko (7-6), and Melissa Dardani (7-6) combined to jump 23-0, marking the 6th straight year a Viking trio has won that event; and in the javelin, Trish Langone (101-1 PR), Lara Delistovich (95-4 PR), and Stephanie Greco (76-9) threw 273-2 for the win.
On day two, track winners were the sprint medley team of Jamie Samper (62.3 400), Rachel Johnson (26.3 200), Dardani (26.0 200), and Ginez (2:22.0 800) that ran 4:16.5; the shuttle hurdle team of Falen Watson (16.5), Lauryn Strebeck (15.8), Stephanie Rodriguez (17.9), and Biondo (18.0) that ran 1:07.9; and the distance medley team of J. Capturing their events with breakthrough personal bests were Lyndsey Sample, who ran 11:54 in the 3200, and Mariah Browne, who leaped 35-1 in the triple jump! The Vikings ran a strong meet at the Raider Relays in Hillsborough on Saturday, coming home with 2 first place finishes, a second, and 2 thirds to go along with 4 other top-6 finishes!
The sprinters had the top performances, winning both the 4X100 and 4X200 with season-best times! In the shorter relay, Melissa Dardani, Zaniah Maynor, Janae Baker, and Simone Hill ran 50.7, while the 4X200 team of Dardani (26.6), Baker (26.8), Shadae Riggins (27.6), and Hill (26.6) ran 1:47.6 for the win.
The 3X400 Hurdle team of Jamie Thompson (67.6), Jamie Samper (68.7), and Falen Watson (70.5) finished 2nd with a solid time of 3:26.8, which is also the 2nd best time in school history!

The Lady Vikings improved to 3-0 on the season with a 100-40 victory over Edison on Tuesday! Leading the way with double victories was Trish Langone, who took the javelin (100-7) and the discus (88-3), with both distances setting new personal bests! Jamie Thompson was also a double winner as she captured the long jump (15-6) and the 400 (62.6). Other events winners were Stephanie Rodriguez (70.2 400 Hurdles), Melissa Dardani (13.1 100), Falen Watson (16.1 100 Hurdles PR), Jamie Samper (2:31.5 800 PR), Rachel Johnson (26.5 200 PR), Lyndsey Sample (12:00 3200 PR), Emily Skalko (4-8 high jump), and the 4X400 team of Janae Baker (63.7), Dardani (66.0), Angelica Villena (69.9), and Yasmine Burd (69.2) that ran 4:28.7.

4/12/2008 Colts Neck Relays 0 South Brunswick 0 Silvers Galore at Colts Neck!
The Vikings did not win any varsity events at the Colts Neck Relays on Saturday, but did manage to finish 2nd in four varsity and four JV events!
On the track, the 4X100 team of Melissa Dardani, Mariah Browne, Rachel Johnson, and Simone Hill clocked a time of 51.12 to finish 2nd, while the sprint medley team of Jamie Thompson (64.1 400), Dardani (27.0 200), Hill (26.9 200), and Sophia Ginez (2:20 800) also finished 2nd in a strong time of 4:18.58!
In the field, the horizontal jump teams both finished 2nd. Browne (15-10) and Thompson (15-5) took part in the long jump, while Browne (32-8) and Lauryn Strebeck (32-11.25) were the triple jump tandem.
Notable 3rd place performances in the varsity division went to the all-freshman 4X200 team of Shadae Riggins (27.8), Browne (27.1), Janae Baker (28.2), and Johnson (26.4) that combined to run 1:49.76, and the 3X400 Hurdles team of Thompson (67.69), Falen Watson (70.92), and Jamie Samper (72.50) that ran 3:30.50. Thompson's time set a new sophomore class record, and it was the first time she had ever competed in the event!

The Vikings had a solid showing at the Rebel Relays in Howell, winning 3 events, breaking 2 meet records and placing in the top-6 in 10 of the 15 events!
The meet records came from the horizontal jumpers. In the long jump, Mariah Browne (17-1.5) and Jamie Thompson (14-9.5) finished first and broke the meet record by over a foot! Browne (32-5.5) and Lauryn Strebeck (31-11.5) captured the triple jump and smashed the meet record by over 2 feet!
Also winning their event was the 4X200 team of Melissa Dardani (26.9), Rachel Johnson (28.2), Thompson (27.4), and Simone Hill (27.6) that combined to run 1:50.0!
