Reflection
I enjoyed this art class because of all the different techniques that I learned throughout the year. I learned which processes I liked and which processes I don't particularly like. One of my favorite units that we did in class was the mixed media. I liked the mixed media, charcoal, graphite, and ink, because I believe that my best work of art came out of that unit. I also liked how detailed you could get with the graphite— getting all of those little hairs was easily done with graphite. The charcoal was for getting the different values when it came to shading. I love charcoal and I wouldn't have figured that out without doing a unit about it. Another process I enjoyed this year was the color design. I liked this unit because it was entertaining to learn about and physically do the project. I like how the school gives the students an opportunity to get the basics of art down in one year. For me, it made me realize that 3D design is not something I want to continue with.
I struggled with a few different units, or processes, we did in art this year; one being the wire sculpture. I really struggled with this unit. I don't know if it was because I chose a difficult object to make out of wire or if it was because 3D is something that doesn't come easy to me. Another process that I struggled with is the animal assemblage sculpture. I think I struggled with this project because I didn't know the best way to represent my animal I chose— which was a jellyfish. I believe I did a pretty good job of taking advice from my teacher and getting feedback on how I could could improve even more. I took the advice and used it for my own good, because you need more than one perspective when it comes to sculptures.
Throughout the year I gained art skills in certain areas. I would say that the more satisfaction you get from the end result makes you value the unit even more. For example I didn't particularly like the mixed media with charcoal, ink, and graphite in the beginning, because I thought it was going to be a challenge. Little did I know, I was going to like the unit in the end. I was very proud of my mixed media project because I met the standards, it turned out quite well and I was proud. Those three things made me like the color design unit and the scratchboard unit as well. The scratchboard unit was an interesting unit for me because I never thought I would get the hang of it. It is the complete opposite of the mixed media unit we did earlier in the year; you're scratching off the positive space and exposing the negative. To me it was an intriguing unit to learn about. In art this year, I'm definitely walking away with more experience and with knowing myself better when it came to what I would want to focus on in the future.
