Ceramics 2

  1. Of which in-class project (Tile Design, Masks, Artist Inspired, Respond and Confront, Tea Pot/set) are you the most proud? Why? Please explain and be specific. What did you learn from doing this project?

My favorite project was the teapot project because I am really proud how it came out. I worked really hard on getting the whales body to look like a real whale. I had to use the coil technique and once I had smoothed everything over I had to remove the head to get it in more of a circular shape I was going for. After it was bisque fired I glazed it with a blue rustic color. All of the following made me really appreciate how much I really liked this project. I learned how to make a pinch pot in a different way because the tail had to be hollow so it wouldn't blow up in the kiln. This required me to make a very long pinch pot and attach it to the body of my whale. I also learned how to make a spout. This required me to make the smallest coil and attach it to the front of my whale, but first I had to make a hole in my whale right where I wanted the spout to be.

2. How has taking this class changed the way you think about ceramics? This could include your own art-making, how you appreciate art, and/or how you might look differently at art in the world around you.

Taking this class had made me realize how much time and skill it takes each artist to make each project. For example, during my respond and confront project, we were given a timespan and were required to finish them by the end of the time given and I for sure didn't have enough time. I felt rushed but knowing artist also have to do the same thing and are able to make them ten times better than anything I made here in class. This makes me have a lot of respect for ceramists and artist out in the world.
