In the world of sports, out of every activity, nothing compares to the competitiveness and aggression of football. Edgewood football is no exception; it is intense, hard, but has a great payoff. The Colts have been putting in work since January, and it has shown off this season. The Colts have been a dominating force and are playing like they are ready for high school football. The 8th grade team has definitely made an impact and has shown their worth in their final season of middle school football.
The Colts started off their season at home against John Wooden (Bedford) It was a tough matchup with a great defensive game from both teams, but in the end Bedford came out with a close win, 6-0. Coming off the loss, the Colts traveled to Martinsville in search of a Week 2 victory. The matchup was not close at all, with the Colts winning 34-6 and the Artesians scoring a garbage-time touchdown. That game was monumental because the defense still looked great, forcing over 4 turnovers, but it was also a great showing for the offense, giving a good foundation for the upcoming games. With Week 3 Vs. Jackson Creek being rescheduled, the Colts had a bye week to regain their strength for the upcoming games.
Colts against Sullavain (Week 4)
Edgewood against OV (Week 5)
Also in Week 4, they had a tough matchup against the Sullivan Golden Arrows. Sullivan came out victorious by a small margin. Then it was time for the most important game of the season, OV. The 8th grade was hyped up for this rivalry: “I feel like our defence has gotten significantly better, our team has got more aggressive, and I feel like if a couple things went our way, we could have finished the season much better.” says 8th grade QB Mathew Dibbern That aggression showed the whole game with the Colts comfortably beating the Patriots —. In Week 6, they went on the road against Tri- North to try and take home a win. Sadly, the Colts lost by 4, with a score of 8-12. In Week 7, the Colts were back on the road against North- Clay. It was a tough game against the Knights, but with some devastating penalties, North-Clay won 24-6. With the season ending, the Colts were looking for a win to close out their season. They faced Bachelor at home on 8th grade night, so the players were extra aggressive and enthusiastic. The Colts dominated most of the game, held the Bulldogs to a shutout, and won 6-0. The Colts finished off their season beating Jackson Creek 14-6, concluding their season being 4-4.
Although the Colts have been excelling, one thing that every team goes through is injuries. The Colts have had a decent number of injuries ranging from season-ending to week-to-week. First of all, 8th grader Nehimiah Martone had a season-ending injury when his collarbone broke during a Week 4 matchup against Sullavian. Also, 7th grader Hagen Fox had a minor tear in his knee in Week 2, and then he re-aggravated it in Week 6, and it turned out to be a meniscus tear. Another injury was Everett Harmon, who had a sprained thumb and a torn ligament and was out for 5 weeks; he returned for the Week 8 matchup against Batcholer. Then there was Leeland Sanchez, who was out in week 2 with an AC joint injury in his arm, and didn’t return until week 4.
Edgewood against JC (Week 9)
In conclusion, the Colts have had a great season and have grown as people as well as players. They have played their hearts out and have provided great entertainment for the school and for others. Their coaches were great and really helped many people learn the rules, X’s and O’s (Football IQ), and how to be a great athlete and person. Go Colts!
