The release of the 1995 hit Jumanji made 100 million dollars at the box office and also has a board game and 2 sequels that are also hits. It is getting another sequel, Jumanji: Open World. Jumanji: Open World picks up after the events of Jumanji: The Next Level. Jumanji: Open World will be released on Christmas Day this year. But what even is Jumanji?
Jumanji is a series about a group of people (they are not the same in every movie) who either make the game come out of the console/ bored game or get teleported into the game and have to figure out how to fix what they did. For the 1995 movie and Jumanji: Open World, they have to put the game back into the console/ board game, while the other two movies, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, are about the cast getting out of the game. Open World has the modern cast try to get the game characters and the animals back into the game; the movie has no official rating yet, but it is rumored to be pg-13.

The Jumanji movies started in 1995 with the first Jumanji movie that follows 2 kids who play a board game they found in a mansion attic that releases a bunch of animals and people into their town. After the 1995 movie, there was another movie released in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, that follows the cast we have now as they play on a console and get dragged into the Jungle; the cast has to retrieve a jewel and go to a huge jaguar statue and yell Jumanji to escape. After Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, there is Jumanji: The Next Level, where the cast returns to retrieve a necklace that brings life to Jumanji before everything is destroyed, and then there is Jumanji: Open World. Gladys Russell, a 7th grader, said, “The Jumanji series is great, but Jumanji: The Next Level is my favorite.

Jumanji: Open World is directed by Jake Kasdan; he also wrote the movie along with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Stars from Previous movies will be returning, like Jack Black as Professor Shelly Oberon, Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Kevin Hart as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, and Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse. Both the cast from the real world and the cast from inside the game will be starring in this movie, instead of one group being in the movie for only a few minutes while the other group gets the rest of the movie. A 7th grader named Goldie Russell says that “The cast is perfect for the movies.”
Overall, the Jumanji series is a huge hit across America, as it is getting another sequel that will probably be rated PG-13. Jumanji: Open World will be released in theaters on Christmas day of 2026.
