Science
Redesign your Parachute: How can you change your parachute to make it work better? Do you need to make a bigger or smaller circle? Use a different parachute material? Use more or less string?
OR do this Engineering Challenge: Design a boat that will float and hold as many pennies as possible.
Materials: 12” x 6” piece of Aluminum foil to make your boat, something that can hold water: large bowl, sink, bucket, tub or bathtub
Plan: What shape will your boat have? Will it be more like a canoe or a barge? Draw your ideas.
Predict: How many pennies (or other objects) do you think your boat will be able to hold?
Make: Make your model - Shape a piece of aluminum foil into a boat shape.
Test: Float the foil boat on water. Add pennies until the boat sinks. Count the number of pennies the boat held.
Reflect: Did your boat hold as many pennies as you thought it would? What features does your boat have that help it float? What shape is it? Would a different shape work better? Does where you put the pennies in your boat matter? How might the design be improved so the boat can hold more pennies?
Redesign: Redesign your boat and see if the new design will hold more pennies.
Challenge: Use ½ as much Aluminum foil. Can your new boat hold as many (or more!) pennies as the boat you made before?
Remember to record your observations in your moon journal.
