Force and Motion & Waves: Week 3

Please Do These Lessons...

Day 1

Introducing the Force and Motion through the Cross Cutting Concept of Patterns

  1. View Bozeman science video Patterns

  2. What patterns can you see in how things move? For example:

    • How do cars and other vehicles move?

    • How do bicycles and skateboards move? How do they move differently when going down a hill versus goin up a hill?

    • How do objects in your house move? When do they move?

    • How is moving something heavy different than moving something that is light?

    • How is moving something heavy that has wheels on it different than moving something heavy that does not have wheels?

Day 2

Safety Features of Cars - Day 1

What do you think are the most important features in a family vehicle? List five features that are most important to you. You can ask your family to help you with this if you want to. What do they think are important features of your family vehicle?

Then, list the five features that you (and your family) consider to be the most important features that affect a family vehicle’s safety.

Optional: Use this student worksheet to guide your learning - What features in cars make them safer?

What patterns do you see in the features that make cars safer?

Day 3

Safety Features of Cars - Day 2

Using what you have learned about vehicle safety from videos and using data, make a claim as to which of two cars is the safest and provide evidence to support your claim.

Day 4

Measuring Speed

The student worksheet for this lesson provides guidance for learning what speed is and how to measure it.

Speed is introduced through the example of a car crash. The short video below, allows you to see the impact of two cars crashing (and the safety features that helps lessen passenger injuries)

Optional: Videos 2 & 3 will introduce the concept of speed and how it is calculated. Video 4 compares the speed of things from a snail to the speed of light in 4 sets of comparisons.

This virtual lab allows you to make speed calculations for 3 trials of a car going down a ramp.

Day 5

Reflection

Reflection on what we learned

  • What did you learn about car safety and measuring speed?

  • Why do you think speeding is a factor in about 20% of fatal car accidents?

  • Use this graphic organizer to share one pattern that you learned about this week for car safety or speed.
