Ecology: Week 3

Please Do These Lessons...

Day 1

Introducing Ecology through the Cross Cutting Concept of Patterns

  1. View Bozeman science video Patterns

  2. What patterns can you see in the relationship between an organism and its environment? For example:

    • What is the relationship between a frog and the pond that it lives near?

    • What effect might a human have on a pond environment and how might that affect a frog?

    • What is the relationship between a bird that you see in your yard and the environment where it gets its food and shelter?

    • How might humans affect a bird’s ability to gather food, reproduce, and find shelter?

    • What is the relationship between you and the environment that you live in?

    • How has your relationship with the environment that you interact in changed since you had to stay home for COVID-19?

    • What patterns can you see in how organisms interact with their environment?

Day 2

What effect can an introduced species have on an environment? What, if anything, should be done to control introduced species?

We are going to introduce the effect of invasive species on native species through these videos. They are all under 5 minutes. Some are significantly shorter than that. Watch as many as you like, until you feel that you understand why we need to be concerned about invasive species.

Questions to think about: Think about the patterns you saw about invasive species in the videos that you watched.

  • Why are invasive species often so successful in a new environment?

  • Why are invasive species harmful to the new environment that they have been introduced into?

  • Why do scientists and others want to stop the spread of invasive species?

  • What patterns do you see in invasive species. What attributes do they all share?

Day 3

Changes in Populations: Ups and Downs - Day 1

Compare the population trends of the Zebra mussels where they are native (Lake Milo in Poland) and where they were introduced (Hudson River in New York). Look for patterns in data by graphing and by analyzing graphs.

Day 4

Changes in Populations: Ups and Downs - Day 2

Compare the population trends of the Zebra mussels where they are native (Lake Milo in Poland) and where they were introduced (Hudson River in New York). Look for patterns in data by graphing and by analyzing graphs.

Day 5

Reflection

What did you learn about invasive species and their impact on ecosystems?

Use this graphic organizer to share one pattern that you saw in the work that you did this week.
