Force and Motion & Waves: Week 4

Please Do These Lessons...

Day 1

The Science and Engineering Practice of Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

Watch the Bozeman Science video " Planning and Carrying out Investigations"

  • Think about a question that you have about something in and around your home.

  • If you can, focus on a question that relates to how things move.

  • How could you design an experiment that would answer that question?

Day 2

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

You will use the PhET Simulation Forces and Motion for this lesson to design your own experiment to try to make a cart move or not move. The terms balanced and unbalanced forces will be introduced.

Open up PhET simulation “Forces and Motion.” - Go to the NET FORCE simulation for the following activity. Here is the link:

Student worksheet for the Inquiry - What causes objects to move or stand still?

Day 3

Speed and Collisions

You will use a SEPUP Labsent video to answer this question “Does vehicle speed affect the forces in a collision? “ The student worksheet will guide your learning.

Day 4

Mass and Collisions

Use the student worksheet to guide your investigation of - How does the mass of an object affect the force it applies during a collision?

Begin the lesson by trying to explain the phenomenon of a wrecking ball hitting a smart car.

Explain what forces are at work before during and after the crash.

Predict what might happen differently if the wrecking ball were lighter or heavier.

Plan an investigation to test the impact of mass on a collision. It is optional for you to carry the investigation out.

Day 5

Reflection

What did you learn this week about how scientists and you plan and carry out investigations?

Use this Graphic Organizer to help you organize one experiment that you conducted.
