Earth in Space: Week 3

Please Do These Lessons...

Day 1

Introducing Earth in Space through the Cross Cutting Concept of Patterns

  1. View Bozeman science video Patterns

  2. What patterns can you notice about our changing planet? For example:

    • When do you see the sun, moon, and stars? Can you describe or model the movement of these objects in the sky?

    • What else do you see in the sky? Are there patterns of movement to those?

    • Are there details in the pattern of the seasons that you can explain?

    • Can you connect those to the movement of the Earth, Sun, and moon?

Day 2

A Day on Earth

Introduction: What are your ideas about days, years, and seasons? Use this sheet to record your current thinking.

Next, model what you think is happening on a Day on Earth here, then in part 2 of the sheet examine the possible explanations.

Day 3

Sunlight and Seasons

You will be looking for patterns in the data for Sunrise and Sunset times and the angle of the sun in this activity.

Before you begin your data activity take a look at this PBS Learning Media Video to help you understand the data that you are going to be looking at: Daylight Hours and the Sun's Apparent Path

Optional: After you have completed the data activity - take a look at this Video

Day 4

Why do we have seasons?

Take a look at this PBS Learning Media Inter actives: Why do we have seasons? - which compares sun’s path in the sky and angle at four different locations on Earth.

  • NewYork which is in the northern US in the Northern Hemisphere

  • Miami which is in the southern US in the Northern Hemisphere'

  • Singapore which is close to the equator,

  • Melbourne which is in Australia in the Southern Hemisphere

Think about these questions as you explore the simulation

  • How does the sun's angle affect the person's shadow?

  • How does the path of the earth change? '

  • How does where you are on earth influence the path of the sun in the sky and the shadow of the person at noon? What patterns do you see?

Look for patterns in vegetation seasonally across the globe in this interactive Global view of of the seasons

View this video: Earth’s seasons video: Narrated animation that “stops time” to show different perspectives to better develop understanding of Earth’s seasons.

Day 5

Reflection

What did you learn about the patterns of day and night on Earth, and about the Earth’s seasons?

Use this graphic organizer to share one pattern of the Earth-Sun-moon system.
