"NHS England health and justice teams commission to the ‘principle of equivalence’ which means that the health needs of a population constrained by their circumstances are not compromised and that they receive an equal level of service as that offered to the rest of the population" (NHS England Health and Justice Framework, 2022-2025).
Clinical research delivery in prisons is essential for addressing the complex healthcare needs of incarcerated individuals. The Correctional Research Delivery Network has been developed by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) which is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care.
Our aim is to influence, be part of, and explore health and care research in prison settings together. This project has the potential to drive meaningful improvements in research delivery within prisons and contribute to the overall health and well-being of inmates and the wider community.
We are inviting you to collaborate with us in the development and delivery of innovative research studies that focus on the health and well-being of prisoners, young offenders and staff.
Mental and physical health problems among prisoners have been well reported. To address this, the NIHR is working with prison staff, prisoners, young offenders and academic researchers to improve the health and care of those living and working in this underrepresented community.
By joining us, you can learn about the various health and care studies happening, and find out how you can get involved, including how the NIHR can support you.
help your prison contribute to shaping the health of the nation
provide access to new treatments, practice or screening programmes that are not yet available to the general population
offer professional training and development opportunities to staff, helping to increase employee retention and satisfaction.
Informing you of opportunities to take part in high quality research, both locally and nationally
Supporting your prison with the setup and delivery of a research study (most studies will require minimal resources from the prison)
Providing research nurses, practitioners and support staff throughout your involvement
Supporting with necessary governance arrangements
Provide access to funding to reimburse staff time and involvement in research
Provide access to free research training.
We will work with academic partners and prison stakeholders to identify the key areas of need and develop prison research studies to inform change
We can support meetings with Governors and Healthcare providers to help develop research studies that are of an interest to prisons
We will help researchers to share their findings, including further phases of research and examples of where evidence changes practice.
Impact-C19P is the short name for the research project “Impact of Covid-19 on delivery and receipt of prison healthcare in England and implications for health inequalities: a mixed methods study”.
We will keep you updated on:
New studies
Resources and research results
Training and opportunities for the whole team.
