The Declaration has four parts to it.
The Preamble, the Declaration of Natural Rights, List of Grievances, and Resolution (Declaration) of Independence. What does each mean? Read on.
The Preamble- This explains the purpose of the document and the why the document was written.
Declaration of Natural Rights- This section explains that the writers of this document, and the people they represent (the other colonists that believed in Independence) feel that they have Natural Rights. They go on to say that the government should protect these rights.
List of Grievances- In this section the writers list the things that the King (and Britain in general) has done to wrong to the colonists. The list includes 27 problems that the colonists had.
Declaration of Independence- A statement to King George III that the colonists are declaring their independence from Britain.
