1. Read through this document that provides the codes (laws) of how slaves should live and others can treat them.
1. And it shall be further enforced by the authority aforesaid, That if any slave who is out of the house or plantation where that they live, or are usually employed, or without some white person with them, if they refuse to submit or undergo the examination of any white person, it shall be legal for any white person to chase, apprehend, and moderately correct such slave; and if any such slave shall assault and hit that white person, the slave may be legally killed.
2. XVII. And be it further enacted by the authority, That any slave who
is guilty of homicide of any sort, upon any whiter person, except by accident, or in defense of his master or other person under of the slave, shall, upon conviction of the crime, suffer death; and every slave who tries raise or attempt to raise a rebellion in this Province, that tries to convince any slave to run away and leave this Province, every such slave and slaves, and his
and their accomplices, aiders and abettors, shall suffer
death;
3. Sec. 90. If any slave is killed for refusing to give up him or herself, contrary to law, or in fighting back against any officer, or other person, who arrests or tries to arrest such slave or slaves, and such officer, or other person kills the slave that is resisting, shall be, and he (the officer or arresting person) is by this act, immune from any prosecution (legal action) for such killing the slave; and that in every case where slave or slaves shall be valued by two reputable people, not being of family to the master or owner of the slave, upon oath to be recited by them, and to be appointed by the nearest judge, "well and true value of what such slave was worth (decide how much money the slave was worth), to the best of their knowledge, without favor or partiality," and that the whole value of such slave or slaves shall be certified by such persons to such judge, and that amount of money shall be paid to the owner or owners of the slave or slaves, by the treasurer this province on which the same death happened, upon a certificate (official confirmation) from the said judge of the death and value of such slave or slaves, out of the tax funds of this province in the hands of such treasurer, without fee or reward.
4. Slaves, under all circumstances, are not allowed to leave town. They must remain in the city limits of Charleston if they are owned by a citizen of Charleston. If they live in the country area surrounding Charleston, they must not leave the plantation that they work on. The only exception to this mandate is if said slave has a letter, written by his owner with the following information:
Permit this slave to be absent from Charlestown, (or any other town, or if he lives
in the country, from Mr. ________ plantation, _______ parish,) for ________ days or
hours; dated the _______ day of _______.
The master of the plantation should sign this letter. If a slave is caught in the country without this document, or without a white person the slave shall be punished by having their shirt removed, and whipped on their back 20 times.
If a person gives a slaves a pass without the consent of the slaves owner or master, that person will have to pay the sum of 20 pounds to the slave's owner.
