Today you are going to use your iPads, and your imaginations...to create 30 second commercials trying to get people to come to your colony.
To do this you might use a prop or two from the room. You might create a catchy tune or jingle. You might have a funny punchline. No matter what, you are trying to get people to come to your colony.
Rules:
Must be between 28 and 32 seconds. Not over, not less. Points will be deducted for going over or under time.
All members of the group must appear on screen in your movie.
You must have more than one camera angle. One long shot will not be acceptable.
We MUST be able to hear you. This means you must make sure there isn't too much background noise when you record, and the iPad should be close enough to "hear" what you are saying.
Suggestions and Process:
I would start by learning what is good, or supposed to be good about my colony. If I have a middle or southern colony I might want find out if the weather is decent. If it is then that might be the selling point...hey, the winters are much nicer. (for example)
Once you have figured out some reasons for coming to the new colony I would come up with some interesting ideas for how to do the commercial. A jingle, a funny story line, or something of the like would be appropriate. We don't simply want, "Come to Rhode Island because its good. Yay." That isn't very effective.
When you record, you need to think about noise. If you speak quietly, if you speak at a big distance from the iPad (because that's where the microphone is), or if there is too much background noise...we CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!! Make sure we can hear you.
Be aware of lighting. If you have a light source behind your actor/actress/speak the light will not shine on their face. This will make a shadow on their face and we won't be able to see them. My advice is that if you are near a window or door, film with your back to the window or door that has light coming in through it. Then your actor's face will be illuminated.
You are required to have more than one angle used for a background. This means that you will need to record once, stop the video, reset, and record another part.
Think about backgrounds. Look at what is in the background of your video. If the background in one shot is the lockers, maybe the next scene, or shot should have a blank wall or classroom background. Making interesting videos takes more than funny or interesting things to say.
Here are some resources that might help you understand what your assigned colony is like.
SCHEDULE
Day 1
Step 1- Group and Colony
Step 2- IDentify who started your colony and why. Do this by googling "(Your Colony) Founder and Reasons". There will be a number of websites that will offer information. CLICK ON THE LINK!! DO NOT just read the Google summary. When the teacher comes up to you and asks "Why was your colony founded" you need to have the complete answer...not just look at them blankly and say "I don't know". You may also use YouTube to watch videos about your colony.
Step 3- IDentify the strengths of your colony. How do people make money? What do people like about the colony? What kind of freedoms do you get in your colony? All of this should be known before you do anything else. To complete this, you will need to, again, do research.
Step 4- Decide what YOU like about the colony and want to "sell" to convince people to come to your colony.
Step 5- Create an idea for a commercial, selling something about your colony that makes people want to join you. Then, write a script. After the script is written, do a read-through in the classroom to test timing and see if it makes sense.
THEN REVISE IT AND MAKE IT EVEN BETTER
Step 6- IF TIME Decide a shot list, so you know what "video shots" you need to make your video.
If you get all of this done, and done WELL, share your plan with the teacher. Once they approve, you may work on ALEKS or read
Day 2
If you haven't finished the steps from day 1, you may proceed to filming. Keep in mind, if you have a microphone, others are using it. So don't hoard one and not actually film. This ISN'T like making Tik Toks. You need to have the ideas ahead of time, film them, then edit them. Do NOT just go hang out in the hallway. EDITING SHOULD BE DONE IN THE CLASSROOM.
Day 3
Complete the videos. When done, upload a copy of the video to one group member's Google Classroom. This is DUE by the end of the day on Friday, so make sure they are submitted on time.
