Today we will be examining the branches of government, and how they check and balance each other.
Answer Scenario 1, 2 and the Anticipatory Set 2 on a piece of paper. Keep the paper, as we will turn it in when I return.
Scenario 1- A brother and sister are going to split a candy bar. The older brother is about to cut the candy bar, while the younger sister is saying that it isn't fair. "You has all the power!" The parents hear this conversation and decide something must be done.
What could the parents do to balance the power between the two?
Scenario 2- Two people are driving down the road, listening to the radio. One person touches the radio, and turns it to a hip-hop station. The other person says, "Are you kidding me?" They turn the radio to a classic rock station. How could we balance the power in these situations?
Anticipatory Set 2
Joni Earnst, Ashley Hinson, Kim Reynolds, Steve Geerts, Charlie Thomson
What is the common thread of of all of these names above?
Step 1: You need to complete the 3branchestrue-false pdf below. You don't need to open it in noteability, simply answer on a separate sheet of paper. You will discuss the answers as a class when everyone is done.
Step 2: Watch the video below
Step 3: You will make a triangular flow chart showing the following things:
--Three Branches of Government and what we call each branch (Executive Branch-President)
--How each branch is able to "check and balance" the other branches (think triangle)
--The names of the people that hold the offices that specifically represent you (i.e.- the names of Iowa's Representatives and Senators, the President and the Supreme Court Justices) . You may need to use Google to help you with these.
--The responsibilities of each branch (what do they do). What is the Executive Branch in charge of, Judicial, Legislative? What decisions do they make?
Each person is responsible for making their own, however, you make work with a partner. I have included some extra reading below in the PDFs that you can look through to help you if you need it.
Struggling with step 3? Here’s some more info to help you
Here’s what ya do. Draw a big triangle on a piece of paper. At each point of the triangle write down one of the branches of government. The “legs” of the triangle (between the different branches) write down how that branch can check the other. Like, the President can veto the Congress, but they can over ride the President.
Then, next to the branches, describe what each does. What does the Congress do? What does the President do? Etc. who makes the laws? Who enforced laws? Who can declare war, that kind of thing
Step 4: Know the material and be able to accurately explain your flow chart to your classmates. You will turn this in google classroom
Step 5 : Government scavenger hunt. Listen to the teacher and be the first the answer, correctly. There my be prizes involved. Be sure to write down the answers as you go along. They will be important later.
Step 6: Watch CNN10 (optional)
Step 7: Begin studying the first ten Amendments of the Constitution.
Step 8: Read
