We have learned that the issue of slavery was not settled in the Constitution and the framers passed that resolution of that controversy to the next generation. As we know as we look back at history, it will take a Civil War and 612,000 dead soldiers to resolve the issue of slavery, but this didn't happen in a vacuum, or in a short time, or on a whim. It would take 80 years and a multitude of events and legislative attempts to fix it before an election of a President would finally spur military action.
