The Small Necessities Leave At allows employees to take off up to 24 hours in a 12 month period for family's activities, medical appointments.
Massachusetts law about sick leave includes:
Employees who work for employers having 11 or more employees may earn and use up to 40 hours of paid sick time per calendar year, while employees working for smaller employers may earn and use up to 40 hours of unpaid sick time per calendar year.
Employees may earn 1 hour of sick time for every 30 hours they work.
All employees can earn sick time including part time, temporary, and seasonal employees.
As of January 2024, Navigation Games offers a max of 40 hours of unpaid sick time per calendar year, with accural of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
Workers must be paid 1.5 x regular rate of pay (RRP) for all hours over 40 in a week. This is the federal baseline and Massachusetts does not add additional requirements. This applies to non-exempt employees. Source (Gusto)

As of Jan 2024, our policy # is 76WEGAV60GA, renewal date 12/31/2024, estimated annual premium $508, with The Hartford. Cost depends on howmuch we pay our employees and the jobs they perform. We pay $.62 for every $100 we pay our employees.

Nonprofits in MA are not required to purchase unemployment insurance, but then they'd need to cover costs themselves. Navigation Games does purchase unemployment insurance.
MA law about employment termination
"any employee [voluntarily] leaving his employment shall be paid in full on the following regular pay day, and, in the absence of a regular pay day, on the following Saturday; and any employee discharged [or terminated] from such employment shall be paid in full on the day of his discharge..."
City of Cambridge requires vendors to be subject to the Living Wage Ordinance (2.121) which provides a minimum wage. The wage is adjusted each year no later than March 1st. As of March 1, 2024, the living wage is $19.09 an hour. Every year, the living wage should be verified.
The MA minimum wage is $15/hour as of 1/1/2023 for non-tipped employees. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 as of 1/1/2023.

The IRS has a twenty point test for being an independent contractor.
Classification standard for independent contractors:
the individual is free from control and direction in connection with the performance of the service, both under his contract for the performance of service and in fact; and
the service is performed outside the usual course of the business of the employer; and,
the individual is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, profession or business of the same nature as that involved in the service performed.
Vacation leave - MA does not require an employer to give vacation time. Unused vacation time must be paid out when an employee is terminated for any reason. Source.

Sexual harassment. MA provides model policies, and information about education & training programs.
Parental leave. Employers with 6 or more employees must provide 8 weeks of leave per child. Leave may be with or without pay. Paid family and medical leave (PFML) is funded through employer and employee contributions, and is different from the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Employees at non-profits may not be eligible for unemployment benefits. Employers can opt in. As of Jan 2024, Barb is not sure if our opt-in UI payments also cover PFML.
