Students in Temporary Housing Research
Evidence of Impact: The Research
The New York City Office of Community Schools initiative on Students in Temporary Housing is based on a strong and diverse evidence base, and ongoing research that continues to inform, evaluate, and improve the circumstances of students in these situations.
Multiple national studies have found the impact that students in temporary housing face both in their lives within and outside of school . Research
has shown the following results:
Roughly 1 in 10 students within elementary school in New York City are in temporary housing situations.
Majority of temporary housing students are situated in the Bronx
Students in temporary housing are more likely to be chronically absent and fall behind in academics.
Even a short period of time in a temporary housing situation can impair a student's long term academic career.
Students in such circumstances are more prone to mental health and suicide issues.
