The original version of the Arvind Gupta-inspired Box Sprinkler was made by filling a beaker with water, attaching a fan to catch the wind, creating a spraying mechanism, and creating a lid to keep the water in as the water sprayed upward. This design had a lot of issues, including the lid not being secured to the beaker, the fan didn't work very well, and the lid did not keep the dowel in place very well. Jacob Sandler refined the design by cutting the center bar out of the spindle, creating a way to keep the dowel in place (washers glued so that the hole was in the center of the lid), and attaching the motor and keep it in place using a styrofoam cup and glue. The new container is much larger than the mason jar, so now the water spraying is much more visible than it has been in the previous versions. Jacob also soldered on a button to keep the battery from draining quickly.
This is a well-scripted design to follow the flip light project. It allow students to add a maintain contact pushbutton to add to their skill set for electronics and tinkering projects. The step-by-step making instructions are shown in the slideshow (upper left).
