Young makers can spend hours tinkering with a marble run. These are typically individual projects. To foster Group Making and Learning, which is highly desirable to develop skills with working in groups, I like to connect marble runs. The connection can be Rube Goldberg chain reaction style - the end of one marble run triggers the next one; or better still, the marble or bouncy ball is transported from the end of a straw roller coaster or marble run on one table to the beginning of a new marble run or straw roller coaster on another table.
The intent of this project is to build content - I want off-the-shelf examples developed by IB Design-Tech students to create imaginative transitions that connect marble runs between tables. I would like to have an inventory of 4-6 techniques (with parts, video, step-by-step instructions) so that multiple student marble runs across many tables can be assembled quickly (under 15 minutes).
Design Challenge: Your Table Group will build two marble runs as your test devices; then your Group will design/build four (or more) transitions across Fab Lab tables. Two of the transitions should be Rube Goldberg style chain reactions; and two of the transitions should be devices which marbles from the end of one device on one table to the start of a second device on another table.
Your final project post should include:
