Bridge Challenge + Innovation Skills

Your group is designing a bridge to span 42-in., which is 3.5X the length of the longest component in your inventory (12-in. paint stirrers).

Each group will start with an inventory consisting of:

• 60 paint stirrers
• 40 medium size craft sticks
• 25 popsicle sticks
• 25 glue sticks
• 100-ft of string (mason line)

Your bridge should support the passage of a remote-controlled RC-Bridge across the bridge and over a barricade in less than 5 seconds (non-destructive test).

You will then place hex nuts on the bridge while the other groups count how many hex nuts your bridge can support without failing.

Scoring Guide (30 points; 45 points possible!)

• Ready for Demo Day 1: 0 or 10 points
• RC Car crosses the bridge and obstacle in under 5 seconds: 0 or 10 points
• Hold Hex Nuts without collapsing - 0 (<50); 5 (between 50 and 99); 10 (between 100 and 199); 15 (>200)
• Table Group that holds the max number of hex nuts - 10

Web Post - Document Your Building Experience - web post should include

• Drawings and sketches
• Video showing the performance of the RC car traveling across your bridge,
• Glam shots of your bridge
• At least 5 making photos, (10 marks)
• Journal (IB Style - 3 themes/3 bullet items per theme) reflecting on what you learned/experienced from this design challenge (for example, tell me something that you didn't know until you did this project)

Document four (4) of the eight Innovation Rubric behaviors; (for each instance, include at least two drawings, storyboards, and/or before/after pictures as supporting evidence of your Innovation Behavior and three supporting evidence bullets describing how you measured up to the Proficient description of the Innovative Behavior.
