Ergonomic Exercise - % Range (Group Exercise)

What percentile or percentile range would you select for:

  • Height of a door opening (clearance)
  • Height of a tabletop or countertop
  • Clearance between airplane seats (coach)
  • Gripping pressure of a can opener
  • Height of upper bookshelf in a library for adults
  • Height of opening for a package drop box container

Find two credible web references that agree on the correct percentage or percentage range for each application. This is a Group Exercise (3-5 per table); Your deliverable is a Shared Google Doc among classmates at your table. Include me in your shared list. I will monitor your progress publicly throughout today's class.

Ergonomic Exercise - What Size Table Height?

What size table (height, width, length) would you specify for the laser cutter for high school students?

Which one of our two laser cutter tables is closest to being the correct height (Zach [lower] or Evan [higher])?

How would your specifications change if the laser cutter were being moved to a lower school fab lab?

Support your answer with visuals, tables of ergonomic data, and the bases for your calculations...including a sketch/drawing to make your solution extensible to other laser equipment and other populations of users

Ergonomic Exercise - Mr. Baigrie's Chairs

Go to Mr. Baigre’s classroom (Room 317), photograph the tables and chairs, measure and record the dimensions of the tables and chairs, and explain what’s wrong.

If you can’t change the tables but you can replace the chairs, what are the desirable chair dimensions that will fit two chairs (lecture style) per table?

Find three chair selections from three different BIG BOX retailers. Post the following:

Ergonomic Factors - Psychological/Physical Factors that Affect Learning

Study my classroom with your Table/Group.

What are the psychological factors (what factors affect human sensory perception – light, smell, sound, taste, texture and temperature) in my classroom that can affect human information processing, that is, alertness, perception, or your ability to learn?

What are the physiological factors (affect comfort, fatigue and biomechancis) in my classroom that affect learning favorably? Unfavorably?

Develop your bullet point arguments in your group. Reply as if this were two 9-point IB DT essay style questions – one for psychological factors; one for physiological factors.

Summative Assessment (worth 18 points total) - Prepare one (1) 9-point IB style short answer responses to the question (either)

  1. What are the psychological factors that affect your ability to learn in my classroom?
