Bird Friendly Bird House

Design a Bird-Friendly Bird House (skills test of angles). This is a design project to develop a 3D functional object from 2D components that are laser cut. You can also engrave the surfaces to enhance and customize your design.

Specifications and Design Constraints

  • Material - cardboard prototype
  • Equal-sided pentagon (front and back) with entry hole for bird (may be front only, or front and back)
  • Must have minimum 3-cm diameter opening
  • Must have perch (inside, outside or both)
  • Maximum height - 20 cm
  • Maximum length - 20 cm
  • Maximum width - 15 cm

Summative Assessment - Reflective Post - Scoring Guide (Maximum of 70 points)

  • Complies with Specifications (Requirements) - 0. 5 or 10 points
  • Initial sketch, 0 or 5 points
  • Adobe drawings, 0 or 5 points
  • 2 glam shots (minimum) of your final product - 0, 5, or 10 points
  • Picture or you and your Bird-Friendly Bird House - 0 or 10 points
  • Post at least 5 images on Shared Google Drive - 0 or 10 - Include 1) Initial Sketch; 2) Adobe Illustrator Drawing; 3) and 4) Glam Shots of your Final Product; and 5) Picture of you and your Bird Friendly Birdhouse
  • Soft Metric - Bird Like-Ability (as judged by a panel of lower school students) - 0, 5 or 10 points
  • Reflection - describe your development of laser cutter skills, what was hard or easy about this project, and what tips you would give to next year's students if they had the same project - 0, 5 or 10 points
