The BGE Curriculum (S1-3)

The Broad General Education (S1-3) will provide all young people with:


S1&2 Curriculum

Across S1&2, all young people will experience a range of subjects across all Curricular Areas.  These Curricular Areas include:


In addition, S2 pupils have the opportunity to choose 2 electives from the offers which are run for half a year each.


S3 Curriculum

Young people at Forres Academy are asked to make choices for the courses they wish to follow in S3 while maintaining a Broad General Education.

All pupils will take English, Maths, PSE, PE and RME.

Pupils will choose one subject from the Science, Social Subjects, Technologies and Expressive Arts and then 2 further free choices from all courses available.  These 6 choices will allow preparation to take place to support entering the demands of the Senior Phase in S4.

The Senior Phase (S4-6)

The Senior Phase covers S4 through to S6 and should be viewed as a three-year pathway which provides opportunities to develop:

All of the above will support the transition into their post school positive destination.  


S4 Curriculum

Young people in S4 will choose 6 courses to study at appropriate levels from the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) - usually ranging from SCQF Level 1 to SCQF Level 5.

Pupils in S4 will have core PE, PSE and RME.


S5 Curriculum

Young people in S5 will choose 5 courses to study at appropriate levels (courses are available from SCQF Level 1 through to SCQF Level 6).

Pupils in S5 will have core PE, PSE, Driving Attainment, Study time across the week.


S6 Curriculum

Young people in S6 will choose 4 or 5 courses to study at appropriate levels (courses are available from SCQF Level 1 through to SQCF Level 7).

Pupils in S6 will have core PE, PSE and Study time across the week.  In addition, pupils in S6 are expected to undertake leadership activities throughout the year and support the wider life of the school.



In S4/5/6, pupils have the opportunity to study at UHI Moray as part of their curriculum and access the broad range of qualifications available through the school day link.  For pupils in S6, there are other opportunities to access courses offered to support engagement in a full timetable.

In S5 & S6 there are opportunities for Wider Achievements within school to gain additional accreditation for those not attending UHI Moray.
