With only three weeks left in the semester, this has become quite a busy time for all of us. There is the Sparks Lecture, numerous advisory committee meetings, annual faculty reviews, senior breakfast, COEHS graduating senior luncheon, end-of-the-year celebration luncheon for faculty and staff, CDI undergraduate student recognition, SLP hooding ceremony, ELC hooding ceremony, and University commencement. I want to wish you well and remind you to take a break whenever possible.
I can assure you we will get to commencement just fine, as always. I want to highlight a few special recognitions:
Congratulations to Dr. Katy Hancock for her selection as the COEHS Outstanding Research & Creative Activity Award. And congratulations to Tamela Darnell for her selection as the Outstanding Staff member. These two have led the way for us in terms of excellence in their respective areas.
Last week, we had several COEHS faculty recognized at the Faculty Awards Banquet:
Faculty Innovation Initiative- Kelsey Chadwick
10 Years of Service- Brian Bourke, Teresa Clark, Christina Grant, Katy Hancock, Jamie Mahoney
25 Years of Service- Chhanda Islam
Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award- Holly Bloodworth, representing COEHS
Retirees: Jeff Wylie (1997- 2024) and Raymond Sims (2000-2024)
Collegiate Researcher- Katy Hancock, representing COEHS
Residential College Head- Eric Umstead
Personnel actions:
Congratulations to Dr. Patel on his selection as assistant dean.
The social work program has three openings:
Dr. Jeff Wylie is retiring, and his line is being searched for.
Dr. Whitney Cassity-Caywood has resigned her position and the paperwork to fill this position is being processed.
Rebecca Perry has also resigned from her position. Her resignation paperwork is being processed.
The department chair position for ELC still needs to be filled. The paperwork is completed and is awaiting processing.
The ECE admin position is currently open, with Cindy Plaisance's resignation. Again, the paperwork has been completed, and we are awaiting it to be processed.
Good news on the Watermark program:
Many of you may know that the Watermark program has been suspended since they adopted a Student Access Minimum Model contract on February 13. We learned last week that the contract has been fully approved, and the data uploads from Banner have been reinstated.

As I have said publicly a number of times, this is a magical place of learning, innovation, and growth.
With respect,

Congratulations to the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) who received recognition and an award from SGA 2023-2024 Outstanding Community Service Project!
This was related to CDI's Special Olympics Campus Plunge event which is always a HUGE success.
Additionally, their latest community event was a co-sponsored event "Box in Our Sox" with Tri-Sigma this past weekend. The event was in conjunction with Rock Steady Boxing and was held on the lawn of Alexander Hall. It was to bring awareness of Parkinsons. NSSLHA is led by Kelly Vaughan who is doing amazing work. Congratulations to all the members of NSSLHA!
The Student Association of Social Workers will be selling handmade bracelets and small pursues from The Pulsera Project April 23-25 from 10 am - 3 pm on the Carr Lawn. All the money goes to support the artists in Central America.
You can find out more by visiting. https://www.pulseraproject.org/
KCSS has a surplus of poster shipping tubes.
Email Elizabeth at eabanathy@murraystate.edu if you are interested in some free poster shipping tubes.
This past Saturday (April 20) NSSLHA co-hosted an event with Tri-Sigma and 270 Rock Steady Boxing to promote awareness of Parkinson's disease and reduce the generation gap between college students and older adults. Students from each organization participated in stations which each represented both physical and mental challenges that most individuals with Parkinson's face during their diagnosis. Each station was led by a "boxer" from 270 Rock Steady program.
Last Monday, Alpha Upsilon Alpha Literacy Honors Society had 12 members judge a state-wide KET Education writers contest! They had a wonderful time and will be joining again next year! KET trained AUA members and then AUA judged for a few hours in the evening. Dr. Grant saw the benefit for our students and had her two REA classes join the judging the next day. Altogether about 350 essays were judged over the course of two days from the help of Murray State students and faculty!
Congratulations to Dr. Gomez who won this year’s Max Carmen award!
Upcoming Events
The Student Association of Social Workers (SASW) is having a fundraiser on the Carr Hall Lawn on April 22-26 from 9am to 3pm to support the Pulsera Project.
The Pulsera Project is a nonprofit that educates, empowers, and connects Central American artists with students in more than 3,600 U.S. schools through the sale of colorful handwoven bracelets, or "pulseras" in Spanish. Proceeds are invested in Central American communities.
