Dear colleagues,
This week marks the annual School Psychology Awareness Week (SPAW), a time to acknowledge and promote the crucial role that school psychologists play in fostering a supportive learning environment for children and youth nationwide. From November 6th through 10th, we unite to amplify the importance of mental health, educational inclusivity, and the holistic development of our students.
School psychologists are vital members of school teams, working diligently and collaboratively to address the academic, social, and mental health needs of ALL students. Their expertise in both psychology and education allows them to create nurturing environments conducive to learning and personal development.
Did You Know?
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) recommends a 1 : 700 school psychologist-to-student ratio. The national average is approximately 1 : 1,200. In Kentucky, the average ratio is approximately 1 : 3,000.
There is a national shortage of school psychologists and training programs. In Kentucky, there are only three training programs and Murray State’s is the largest!
School psychologists are best known for special education testing but are also trained to develop individualized intervention plans, promote effective practices school wide, and collaborate with families to increase their engagement with schools.
Murray State’s school psychology students have a 100% pass rate on the Praxis exam in school psychology and 100% employment after graduation. Our students are fantastic!
As we celebrate School Psychology Awareness Week, we encourage you to promote our profession by:
Reading more about school psychology at nasponline.org
Including information about school psychology in your coursework
Inviting our faculty or students to speak with your students
Observing our students in the Assessment Center
Meeting with our program faculty to explore creative ways to promote interdisciplinary collaboration
Thank you for your support!
Dr. Sean Simmons
