COEHS Faculty and Staff || Fall 2022 Conclave
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back from our winter break and holiday celebrations. I hope that this was an opportunity for you to renew and refresh and that your expectations and hopes for the break were met and exceeded.
As we discussed in last Friday’s Dean’s coffee, our fall COEHS enrollments were just slightly under 1,500 students. We have about 970 undergraduate students and an additional 340 masters and doctoral students. The remaining students are in the specialist, second major, and minor programs. As we also discussed, this is a short year for the Kentucky State Legislature, lasting only 30 days. State budgets are not expected to be set. Nevertheless, here at MSU, we are slowly sliding into the budget development season for the FY24 year (next year). We anticipate that we will submit our budget requests to the Provost’s office in February but will not hear back until the late spring meeting of the Board of Regents. Our budget proposal will also include personnel changes, etc. Our emphasis will be to protect open faculty and staff lines. Unfortunately, we still do not have the opportunity to request new or modified course fees. These have to be set by the Board, and new or modified course fees do not appear to be a possibility for the near future.
For the faculty, I sincerely appreciate your continuing commitment to our students and to providing the very best education and experiences possible. I often brag to other deans and to the Provost about the faculty in this college, being discipline savvy and very pedagogy adept. I am convinced that we set the standard for pedagogy at MSU. And, just imagine the overall impact of our students as they engage in their many hours of practicum and internship experiences. Thanks for continuing to create the magic that makes this college a special place to live and learn.
Please let me know if there is anything we can do in the Dean’s Office to assist you as you begin the spring semester. I do want to reassure you that we are now fully staffed in the Dean’s office, with the addition of Natalie Copeland. I am sure you will find her to be an excellent addition. We also have an outstanding group of department chairs, directors, and departmental/unit staff that will help us maneuver through the spring. As a college community, your voices and best thinking are important as well. Stay tuned for word on the Sparks Lecture, the spring student picnic, faculty and staff recognitions, and much, much more.
Thank you, and, again, welcome back. Have an outstanding semester!
-David Whaley
