PHOTOS OF THE WEEK

CRJ professor Alaina Steele and SWK instructor Jeff Wylie had a panel presentation in their joint criminal justice/social work freshmen learning community class on September 27 in Carr Hall. Panelists included [left to right in picture] SWK alum Michelle Hansen (CUBS Coordinator and FRYSC Director for North Elementary), CRJ alum Sam Bierds (Murray Police Chief), Todd Clere (Calloway County Sheriff Deputy), CRJ alum Thomas Reynolds (Murray State Police Detective), and Michael D'elia (Murray State Police Officer). Topics covered included what was good about working in Murray and what were the current public safety and public health issues facing the community. Discussion centered around mental health and substance abuse. Students stayed after to ask questions.

Our school psychology program was WELL represented at this year's Kentucky Association for Psychology in the Schools (KAPS) conference! Jessica Whitsell, school psychology intern with Hopkins County, led a session presentation on differentiated reading groups using a balanced literacy approach. Aspen Vititoe, school psychology intern with Hardin County, and Kiah Goettlich, second year student, each presented their research projects. Kiah was also awarded the Jeanie K. Ewald Scholarship award given to the KY School Psychology Student of the Year (this is our program's FOURTH awardee in a row!). Stephanie Cash, school psychologist in Graves County and MSU alumni, was awarded the WKEC School Psychologist of the Year as well. Drs. Dunham and Simons are incredibly proud of their students' dedication and recognition at this year's conference.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control."

-Elizabeth Gilbert
