DEPARTMENT UPDATE
Submitted by the Lead Teacher of EDU 485
In EDU 485, students received overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding their performance during the mock interviews. Under the guidance of Dr. Kristen Whipple, students were thoroughly prepared for these interviews, showcasing their professionalism and determination. Her meticulous preparation ensured that each student approached the interviews with a high level of professionalism and confidence. One Principal commented particularly on the outstanding qualifications of two candidates, stating that if there had been open positions, they would have been hired immediately. Furthermore, another Principal was so impressed by one student’s skills and demeanor that they expressed a strong interest in having her complete her student teaching internship at their school, emphasizing the powerful impression she left.
Dr. Whipple played an essential role in refining candidates’ resumes, ensuring that each document was polished and conveyed their strengths effectively to potential employers. During the semester, her Zoom classes featured dynamic group discussions that delved deep into various educational laws, particularly highlighting contemporary court cases and rulings that are overlooked in the course textbook. This innovative teaching strategy fostered a collaborative learning environment, prompting students to engage actively by participating in breakout room discussions where they could brainstorm and develop critical ideas. This also played a key role in their preparation for the PLT section of the Praxis exam.
As an integral part of the EDU 485 curriculum, students were assigned with creating detailed teaching scenarios that contributed meaningfully to their interactive portfolios. This hands-on approach not only enhanced their understanding of classroom dynamics but also significantly bolstered their readiness for the PRAXIS assessments. Dr. Whipple’s expertise was invaluable throughout this process, guiding students as they crafted their teaching scenarios, and as a result, many reported feeling much better prepared and qualified to teach! In addition to the practical aspects of teaching preparation, Dr. Whipple required students to reflect on the COEHS dispositions. This reflective practice equipped them with the necessary skills to critically assess their teaching philosophies and identify areas requiring growth. With Dr. Whipple's mentorship, students deepened their understanding of the teaching profession and felt well-prepared to step into real-world classroom environments with confidence. Dr. Kristen Whipple's considerable influence on the learning experience within this course is profoundly significant, fostering a deep and enduring impact on the professional development of candidates, which is essential for their success and advancement.
