Gomuban Relief Printing Plates

McClain's blocks and plates are offered in a variety of materials and styles suited for relief printmaking applications. Pictured are Shina plywood, a high quality, free of voids, knots or blemishes substrate. It is sanded smooth to an even thickness, ready for immediate cutting and printing and is dense enough to hold sharp edges and details through multiple printings.

The cherry plywood blocks are made by a carpenter and craftsman in Maine, who also happens to be a relief printmaker. Regular plank cherry has its drawbacks. It likes to warp and sizes are limited by the size of the trees still available.

Gomuban relief printing plates are soft and very easy to carve. It holds very fine details and crisp edges even under pressure from a press. It is so dense that it can be printed either as an intaglio or as a relief print.

Basswood, Monotype, Scratch foam and Resingrave blocks are offered as well.
