Term 2 | Week 1
Dear parents,
Happy New Year and welcome to 2024 and to term 2 at LOTS.
Though our on campus resumption has got deferred to 29th January, we have ensured online facilitation and interaction from Wednesday 10th January.
Time tables, guidelines and protocols, video links and learning resources have been shared according to class and program requirements, and all support systems are afoot to aid your children access quality academic engagement even during this health and safety enforced delay. Teething issues of the first two days on online classes have been addressed, and we are hoping for a smooth run henceforth. Here are a few visuals from the online facilitations:
Do note that this was a sudden situation and we are doing our best to ensure your child’s time at home is gainfully occupied through the help of these online interactions. There will be teething issues and some patience will be required at both ends. I am certain we can count on your support here, as always.
There are a number of updates on infrastructure and facilities, Learning Support and Special Education Needs, rescheduling of certain events, school protocols, key dates and more - details are in the rest of this newsletter. Further concrete updates will follow next week.
This is going to be a longish second half of the year, having now had to combine terms 2 and 3, and it is also going to be a busy one, both academically and otherwise. New initiatives are afoot, and consolidation of existing ones will of course abound. But the key is to trust the process, and support the children in both their academic endeavors and non academic pursuits.
A consequential offshoot of the delayed school opening is that we have rescheduled the PTCs to 1st and 2nd February, Thursday and Friday. Because nothing can beat face to face meetings. And safety first is always our priority. Hence that call.
We are excited to announce the creation of a Special Education Needs (SEN) unit in School. This unit will provide additional support and services for students with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, behavioral challenges, and other special needs. The SEN unit will be staffed by specific teachers and we will work closely with students, parents, and teachers to develop individualized education plans tailored to each student's unique needs. The goal is to ensure all students have the support they require to reach their full potential.
The establishment of this new unit reinforces our school's mission to inclusivity and meeting the needs of diverse learners. We are dedicated to helping every student succeed. We will be sharing more information soon and we encourage parents to reach out with any questions.
This was scheduled for 26th January. And obviously this has to be now rescheduled. February and March being very busy months already, we are revising the staging of the Annual Production tentatively to April 18th and 20th. We shall confirm these dates in a week's time.
When your children come back to school, they will have access to a set of new toilets, a new Amphitheater with a seating capacity of 350 people, the relocated canteen, an extended space for vehicular movement inside campus, a concrete waiting bay for parents, and a few additional classrooms. All in the endeavour to facilitate a better learning environment.
A new 26 seater School Bus has been added to our fleet, and it will be operational when term 2 commences, from 29th January. The routing is being organized. Parents wishing to avail the bus are requested to get in touch with Ms Mwango or Ms Jacqueline at admin.
The New Amphitheatre
An Amphitheater accommodating an audience of 350 people, with a performance area, has been newly constructed - next to the basketball court. Remember the awesome ambiance of the Dynosian Greek performance amphitheaters of yore? We have tried to retain that pastoral atmosphere and feel, and hence positioned it in a manner that can benefit from the shade of the trees fanning and shading the seating area. It will serve as the venue for many diverse needs - assemblies, open air classes, performances, events, inter house competitions, celebrations, speeches, and more.
A New Set of Additional Toilets
To meet the needs of the growing school population, a set of new toilets are being installed, in the old canteen area. As we grow, so does the need to cater to the comfort and hygiene of our students. And to that end, these two additions will meet age appropriate necessities.
Relocation and Renovation of the School Canteen
The School Cafeteria will now be between the administrative block parking area and the pre primary blocks, with ample visibility and access, and complemented by a paved seating area that is more spacious and more scenic. Because of its strategic new positioning, it will also have parent access.
Enhanced Stock of Fiction Books in the Library
Reading needs to be sustained as not just a key habit but also as a key skill - and this is best arrived at by making reading a fun and pleasurable activity where the student has choice both in terms of what he/she wants to read and the choice of diverse fiction at their disposal. In this increasingly digital and visual age, children are at the risk of losing this key skill - and this wondrous pleasure. Hence we are bringing in a lot of entertaining age appropriate fiction for all age groups - pre primary to senior secondary. We want to make the school library a place learners love to come to and hunt for reading treasures and pleasures.
If your child has moved to another school kindly send an email to the school. This will help us account for the students we have in school hence effective planning.
As you are already aware that our IGCSE 2 and AS/A-level students will be sitting for board exams, we need great support from you. Let us ensure that they attend the current ongoing online lessons and also spend good time studying. They should contact their teachers for help. Take time to monitor the online class attendance.
If you have not yet paid examination fees for your child in IGCSE 2 and AS/A Level please do so. Late payment will attract penalties.
Parents of newly enrolled students need to collect car stickers from the front desk, if not already done so.
