Term 1 | Week 2
“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” - J.K. Rowling
Dear Parents,
Week 1 - Nursery class - child cries and cries and cries. Week 2 day 2 - the parent is pleading but the child does not want to go home, but wants to spend more time with his newfound friends and teachers! (eye witness account).
That, in a nutshell, is LOTS. All a parent needs to do is trust our processes and efforts. The choice the parent made to persist, gave us the opportunity to nurture.
Here is another connecting dot. Last day of the week (week 2). Literary week. An LS 1 student comes running, and declares, “Mr Shouquot, you know what? I just discovered I actually enjoy reading, though I had never ever read for pleasure before this week. Reading to a classmate, being read to by a classmate, hearing from teachers and parents about what they loved reading - led to happy discussions. I discovered you can imagine more while reading than while watching. So thank you”.
I know she was not thanking me per se, but the initiative the school facilitated, and the process of collective engagement with books. I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents who actively participated in this endeavor by volunteering to read to the children at school.
The other big thrust and engagement this past week have been the Parent Orientation sessions run right from Monday to friday. Each of the sessions were tailored and customized to meet the information needs of the particular segment of parents - Monday Pre-school, Tuesday CP1-3, Wednesday CP4-6, Thursday LS 1-3, and Friday IGCSE 1-A Level 2.
Academic road map, Pastoral Care partnership and support, Curriculum overview and assessment timeline, Mentoring and Wellness processes and initiatives, ECA program and guidelines, open Q&A. That was the structure and sequence followed in each session. Each day the sessions ran for two hours - from 14.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs. As advised, please read the newsletter every week and click on the Community Hub tab to access all policies and schedules and time tables and contact lists - and more. And feel free to contact any of us if you need to meet and seek clarification on any aspect of your child’s journey at LOTS.
Please note that the Leadership Camps are coming up, and the first one is from 10th to 12th September - for all students of IGCSE 2, A level 1 and A Level 2. Please ensure the consent forms shared are signed and sent back to school by Monday 9th, if not already sent. The program itinerary and the list of things to carry have also been shared. Homeroom teachers from school will accompany the students, and there will be an expert team of trainers at the camp conducting the activities in a safe and exciting environment. Please note that these camps are mandatory and free of cost, as the school bears all the costs.
Please note that ECAs begin this coming week (from Monday 9th September). We are expecting all students to have completed their activity sign ups. Attendances and category wise groupings will be verified on Monday. All logistics will settle down over the week and thereafter we expect the ship to sail smoothly, as we have designed a deliberate program this time around, keeping all variables in mind.
Other details on the week that was and the week that will be, are in the other sections of the newsletter.
Warm regards,
Shouquot Hussain
Head of School

'Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be. ' - Rita F Pearson.
From the above quote, we should all be that adult who will never give up on a child. Let us offer the necessary support to our children for their holistic development.
Pastoral care lies at the heart of the school’s educational fabric, and it is embedded in everything we do. We care about the mental health and wellbeing of our students.
Some bullying incidents were recorded in Cambridge Primary. Investigations were done, Counseling given to the students and feedback was given to the affected parents. All the incidents are recorded in our incident books for future reference. We shall exhaust all the necessary measures before expelling a student from school. Our aim is to see positive behavioral change in our students rather than sending them out of school.
Let’s help our children to embrace Respect and Empathy from our core values. Let them respect their friends, teachers and parents. Spend time to discuss and guide them on good behavior. If all the students learn to value and respect each other, then the cases of bullying will reduce. Our zero tolerance to bullying will only be successful if we all get involved.
Do not hesitate to inform us on situations that make our students uncomfortable in school. The purpose of pastoral care and wellbeing is to ensure that we create a safe and good learning environment.
This week was Literacy week, which was a big success. On Monday, the parents attended orientation. Tuesday we had book buddy day which was was very interesting. It was a Journey through books!
Day 3 we have parents reading for the learners.
Day 4 Thursday all learners wore T-shirts (colour of their choice) with appropriate writing as a way of appreciating literature and different styles of writing.
The week ended with the assembly, children wore their favorite characters. We also had the Early Years performing, including a poem. As Lusaka Oaktree School we believe developing literacy skills early helps children build confidence, self-esteem, and a growth mindset.
There was the Parent Orientation session at the beginning of the week where we took the parents present through the Early Years roadmap, systems and processes, expectations and support channels.
What an amazing week it has been!
Our week began on a high note with the vibrant Literacy Week festivities. Students enthusiastically participated in engaging activities, including Book Buddy, Character Day, T-Shirt/Pocket Day, and a grand finale that harmoniously brought everything together.
A highlight of the week was Parents' Orientation Day, which offered an interactive and informative experience.
It was heartwarming to see parents connecting with their children's teachers and gaining insight into the school's plans for the upcoming year.
A gentle reminder to all parents: please ensure your children arrive at school by 07:10 daily. Late arrivals can disrupt lessons and impact your child's learning, as "showing up late is a sign of disrespect for others' time and a lack of self-discipline."
On Thursday, our students showcased their creativity with meaningful writings on their t-shirts, making for a truly pleasant day. Heartwarming notes with kind words were shared, spreading joy throughout the school.
The week culminated in a spectacular grand finale, where students brought their favorite book characters to life. We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful for your continued support. Thank you for your partnership in fostering a love for literacy and learning!
The section has had a very insightful week filled with activities ranging from Academic to Non Academic.

3. *PARENT INVOLVEMENT TO ENFORCE SCHOOL POLICIES*
We call upon all Lusaka Oaktree school parents to join in on being deliberate about school policies such as the importance of school uniform, Safety of the children, Attendance and the school code of conduct as this is cardinal for the children's development.
4. *PARENT ORIENTATION*
Thank you to all the parents who joined us for the orientation as well as to those that did not manage. Our session went on smoothly, we ask that you continue giving us feedback as it will help us become the institution we all want it to be. We took note of all your requests and we will act soundly to it.

Literacy Week Celebrations Ignite Creativity in Upper Secondary.
This year's Literacy Week in the Upper Secondary was a resounding success, filled with creativity, enthusiasm, and a shared love for reading and writing among our upper secondary students.
The week kicked off with the "Book Buddy" initiative, where students paired up to exchange and discuss their favorite books, fostering a deeper connection to literature and building a community of readers.
Next, "T-Shirt Day" added a splash of color and inspiration to the week, as students wore T-shirts emblazoned with meaningful quotes and literary references. The hallways were filled with thought-provoking messages that sparked conversations and reflections on the power of words.
On "Book Character Day," the school was transformed into a lively celebration of beloved literary figures. Students brought their favorite characters to life with creative costumes, from classic heroes to modern icons, making the day a fun and memorable highlight of the week.
The grand finale took place with a special assembly, where the talents of our students truly shone. The event featured captivating performances, moving poetry recitations, and various acts that celebrated the richness of language and storytelling. The assembly was a fitting end to a week dedicated to celebrating literacy in all its forms.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and made Literacy Week an unforgettable experience for our upper secondary students!
Parent Orientation for IGCSE/A Levels happened on Friday 6th September, and we oriented parents old and new to the structures of support we are putting in place to support academic growth, the schedules for assessments and the rules of engagement and the initiation of the honors list, and progression processes. Also focused on was the university guidance modules we have developed at LOTS to enable our senior students gain enrolment in top universities across the world. Beyond academics we disseminated the details of the robust pastoral care program that includes mentoring as an intentional thrust, and also a deep insight into our ECA program and sports team specialization plans.
Rally Behind Our Champion: Lumuno Mweemba Represents LOTS at the World Scholar's Cup Global Rounds in Bangkok.
The excitement at LOTS is palpable as our very own Lumuno Mweemba competes at the World Scholar's Cup Global Rounds in Bangkok. This incredible opportunity marks a significant milestone for both Lumuno and our school, as he stands among the brightest young minds from around the globe.
The World Scholar's Cup is no ordinary competition—it's a celebration of learning that challenges participants in areas such as debate, collaborative writing, and a diverse range of academic subjects. Lumuno earned their place in the Global Rounds through hard work, dedication, and an outstanding performance in the earlier regional rounds. Now, he is poised to showcase his talents on an international stage.

The competition in Bangkok is fierce, but he has already proven he has what it takes to excel. Let's come together to support Lumuno as he represent our school with pride, determination, and excellence.
Go Lumuno! We believe in you!
We have just ended week 2 of our mentoring which has been filled with lots of laughter, competition and reflection. Each classroom has had their own unique feel to the 20mins. However, all classes have followed the same routine which has been affirmations, bonding through a lot of games and circle time. Some of our parents had a taste of the mentoring meeting during our parent orientation this past week.
We would like to remind parents once again to ensure children attend the morning mentoring sessions which are compulsory and valuable and a great way to start the day. We will be taking attendance each morning. Furthermore, we have a few new exciting adjustments that we will be sharing in a couple of weeks about the morning mentoring. Additionally, we have some amazing programs lined up to improve our students' wellbeing.
We have hit the ground running as the learning support team. This week we observed children in the pre-primary section, in their classrooms. We identified learners who will benefit with extra support, developed specific individualised educational plans to suit each learner's unique needs and we will be contacting specific parents soon. These tailored educational plans are created in such a way that no student is left behind.
For the coming week we will move on to the primary section and later work our way up to the Secondary Section. As leaning support our goal is to help each student reach his or her full potential, no matter what. It may be hard, it may take time, but in the end, it will be worth it.
ECAs will commence from Monday 9th September. We are so looking forward to active engagements and full schooldays.
Sign ups are done and the first day will be spent getting everybody into the right programs with the right facilitators.
Sports ECAs and non-sports ECAs have been demarcated into different blocks and days for everybody’s convenience and streamlined monitoring.
Team practices for competitive tournaments will also begin in earnest, depending on the ISAZ calendar and seasons.
After ECAs begin, by the end of the week, any parent with specific concerns about ECAs may connect to the ECA Coordinator Coach Asher, or the respective section coordinator, or the Principal Pastoral Care.
Get ready, because TEDx LOTS is just around the corner, and the excitement is building! Our highly anticipated event will be held on the *17th of October*, and it's going to be an inspiring, thought-provoking day filled with ideas worth spreading.
But before we get there, there's one crucial step left—*the final auditions!* Mark your calendars for the 10th of September. This is your moment to shine and showcase your unique perspective. We’re calling on all students who signed up for TEDx LOTS to prepare a compelling 3-minute speech or performance that captures the essence of what TEDx is all about.
Whether you’re sharing an innovative idea, a personal story, or a powerful performance, this is your opportunity to contribute to an event that celebrates creativity, critical thinking, and the power of ideas.
It’s here. It’s exciting. And it’s your chance to be part of something incredible. We can’t wait to see what you bring to the stage!
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the big day. Get practicing, and we’ll see you at the auditions.
Students to be dropped at school by 7.10 hrs.
Any pending ECA sign ups to be completed and handed in asap.
Pick ups should be at 15.30 hrs and definitely no later than 16.00 hrs.
Please follow the chain of communication as reiterated earlier - Form Tutor (class teacher) - Coordinator - Principal (Principal Academics for curriculum issues and Principal Pastoral Care for behavior and wellbeing issues) - Head of School. Mentoring and Wellness Coordinator and ECA Coordinator may be approached for issues specific to their domain.
Leadership Camps are commencing, and hence please be ready to send your children to these camps, keeping the items list in mind. Queries regarding the camps may be directed to the class teachers/program coordinator.
Please read the weekly newsletter, and click the Community Hub tab to access all policies and schedules and overviews and contact lists, and more.
Dear LOTS Families,
We strongly urge you to prioritize your child's immediate return to school. Every day of missed classes results in academic loss, which can be challenging to recover from. Consistent attendance is essential to ensure your child does not fall behind in their studies and can fully participate in the school community.
Kind Regards,
Lusaka Oaktree School
