“I Celebrate myself” - Walt Whitman
Dear Parents,
I know the quote above, at first glance, may seem pompous and self serving, but there is something deeply empowering about the thought of celebrating oneself - one’s own progres, one’s own growth, one’s own sense of self esteem. And that is a legacy we need to arm our children with. The ability to believe in their own worth and the belief that they matter. And it is not about feeling entitled, but about feeling equipped to handle life.
And I believe that is the key intent of all celebrations and festivals - to bask in the joy of being alive. The Family Fun Day we just had, was one of them. The TEDx LOTS event coming up later in the week, will be another. The Independence Day celebration we will have in school after the mid term break will carry forward that legacy. As will the Secondary School Production and the Primary & Pre-primary School Productions that will follow in the months to come.
These celebrations are an opportunity for students to find an outlet for their creative talents and expressions - and more often than not, also an opportunity to find themselves (who they are). You don’t discover what you are good at inside the classroom alone. Chances are you find your best selves when not restrained by walls - physical and metaphorical.
As we begin to wind down for a well deserved breather, remember there is still almost a week to go, and we need to make the days count. We want to see every student in school till the 17th of October.
Warm regards,
Shouquot Hussain
Head of School
The first formative assessments have been marked by the teachers. Please find out from your child(ren) to show the papers and contact the teacher if there is any issue. Also send the paper back to school for our records. You can take pictures of the answer sheets or photocopy the papers in case you want to keep a copy of the answer scripts.

For any further information, please contact Mr Ryan Zulu at ryan_zulu@lusakaoaktree.school who is the coordinator for CP6 and LS3.
Mentoring and Wellbeing program
Our mentorship and wellbeing programme focussed on stress management and gratitude. We looked at what stress is, how it can be managed and how it can affect a student's academic performance. We also looked at collaboration, what it is and why it is good both in school and at home.
May we take time to get feedback from our children on how the mentorship program is helping them. Monitor behavioral changes that are impacted by the mentorship programme.
Grievances
We advise parents to avoid confrontations among yourselves whenever our children report incidents from school. Please follow protocol. The thing to do is to report incidents to class teachers who in turn will give feedback upon sorting out the problem. If we are not satisfied with the outcome, inform the coordinators, and finally head of school. We believe that all matters can be resolved to the satisfaction of all at any of these stages.
Likewise with the issue of tiffins and hot meals.
The new LOTS Student Council took their oath of office in a goosebump inducing ceremony on Monday, 7 October.
Each of the Council members had their badges pinned by the Principal Academics and the Principal Pastoral Care. The Keynote address was delivered by the CEO of the LOTS Board Mr Rakesh Pandey.
The Secondary School female President and the Primary School Male President expressed their fiery intent and aspirational drive through very confident speeches.
Bottom line - our next set of student leaders have taken over the baton from their pioneering predecessors who had done an excellent job. Let us take this opportunity to welcome the incoming team, and express our heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing one.

Saturday 12 October was Family Fun Day at LOTS and both children and parents participated in a bucket load of interesting activities that made for wonderful memories. It was a day of fun, frolic and the colours of life. Here are a few glimpses:
The CP 1B assembly, centered on the theme of 'Respect,' resonated with very visible student learning.. The energy was palpable and their enthusiasm made the performances truly effective. It was great to see every learner contributing.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the parents who attended, supporting the efforts of the children and their teachers.
A Groundbreaking Moment for LOTS.

This week, our university guidance team has been actively engaging with both IGCSE and A-Level students to support their academic and career goals. During the orientation for IGCSE1 students, we discussed the importance of University Guidance and how this process can help them to make informed career choices. IGCSE 1 students have so far selected their subject combination, taking into consideration both their strengths and aspirations.
Our IGCSE 2 students are focusing on finalizing their personal statements, an essential component of their university applications. This week has seen dedicated sessions to help them craft compelling and well-structured statements, reflecting their achievements and ambitions.
In addition to this, we held one-on-one meetings with A-Level students to provide personalized guidance on their university application strategies. These meetings will continue next week, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to make informed decisions about their future.
We are excited about the progress being made and look forward to guiding our students through these critical steps in their educational journeys.
Our Lower Secondary 3 students went for a 2 nights 3 days Leadership Camp from 7 October to 9 October at the CREED School of Leadership. They had a very growth inducing time - a time of self discovery, a time of challenging one’s limits, a time of stepping out of comfort zones and stepping into newer territories, a time of building resilience.
Here is the evidence of their engagements during the camp.
With more than 450 teachers from 50 international schools, the Teachers Teaching Together (TTT) Conference held on Saturday 12 October was the biggest ever till date. And we are proud of the fact that 3 of our teachers were workshop facilitators there - Ms Lauren Njungu, Ms Sharon Phiri and Mr Brian Kawonga.
A few parents are still dropping their children at school as late as 7.30 and beyond. This will not do, because these children are then left at a disadvantage as they miss the crucial mentoring sessions with their homeroom teachers and mentors.
Do not miss TEDx. Procure your seats and buy your tickets before we reach the number 100.
Note that classes are on till Thursday 17 October and attendance is key - and we want all students present in school when we reopen after the mid term break on 28 October
Dear LOTS Families,
We strongly urge you to prioritize your child's immediate return to school. Every day of missed classes results in academic loss, which can be challenging to recover from. Consistent attendance is essential to ensure your child does not fall behind in their studies and can fully participate in the school community.
Kind Regards,
Lusaka Oaktree School
