“ The choices we make lead up to actual experiences. It is one thing to decide to climb a mountain. It is quite another to be on top of it” - Herbert A Simon
Dear Parents,
There are many smaller peaks LOTS acorns scale on a daily basis - in order to arrive at the bigger mountains they need to summit. The Assemblies, the ECAs, the Mentoring sessions, the Assessments.
These are the cumulative steps they climb in order to scale the bigger peaks. TEDx was one. And you will find many others listed and described in this newsletter. The Inter House debate, the Football Scholarship trials, the Student Anthology writing project, the conducting of the Online Parent Workshop, the prep towards the Secondary School Production, the gestating Student Council Community Projects, and…..I can go on, but it would suffice to say that all this, and more of this in the term to come, are the tools and skill sets that will propel your children to becoming able custodians of the future - their own, and that of the world.
The focus now shifts to their academic prowess and the rigor of term ending exams and assessments. We are doing our best to support and enable them, and we are counting on your support at home to keep their priorities right. More on this aspect has been detailed in the sections by the Principals.
Warm regards,
Shouquot Hussain
Head of School
Exam schedules have been shared on the WhatsApp groups; please print a copy and keep it in your child’s study area, so that it acts as a ready reckoner and reminder.
We have noticed improvements in some subject results in the second formative assessment, and that is because students are now getting a little more serious about these exams. The formative assessments help the students to study and revise the topics as the topics are taught and not wait for the final semester exams.
We are finding it challenging sometimes to send the students for support lessons. Please follow up at home with your child about the support lessons, and if there are doubts you have, please contact the class teacher or the coordinator.
Please be informed that ECAs for this term have concluded, as End of Term Exams for secondary school will commence from Wednesday, 20 November, and students across grades, including primary, need time now to prepare for their examinations.
Mentorship & Well-being
In mentorship and well-being the students looked at communication and
growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. They also looked at how they can develop a growth mindset.
Communication is the sending and receiving of information and can be one-on-one or between groups of people, and can be face-to-face or through communication devices. Communication requires a sender, the person who initiates communication, to transfer their thoughts or encode a message. Students advised to use a good tone of voice when communicating.
Class Attendance
At Lusaka Oaktree School, we believe that regular attendance is essential for academic success. Attending school regularly helps students develop important skills, build positive relationships with peers and teachers, and develop a sense of responsibility and accountability. We encourage all students to attend school regularly and punctually.
Regular attendance is essential for academic success and overall development of a student. Research shows that students with good attendance are more likely to achieve better grades and have higher graduation rates. In addition, regular attendance ensures that students do not fall behind in their studies and have the opportunity to fully participate in classroom activities.
Parents/guardians are expected to notify the school in advance of any planned absences, such as medical appointments or family vacations. In cases of unplanned absences, parents/guardians are expected to notify the school through the class teachers as soon as possible.
School Nurse
The school now has a nurse who attends to our students by providing preventive and screening services and health education. Our nurse is able to give first aid to the students and only makes referrals when need be.
On November 15 2024, we hosted an Inter-House Debate Competition. The event showcased the intellect and eloquence of our students from Lower Primary to Upper Secondary, with the three houses battling it out for debating glory.
The topics were thoughtfully chosen to engage young minds and spark critical thinking:
Lower Primary: ICT should be introduced at an early stage in school.
Upper Primary: Learners should be allowed to choose their own subjects in school.
Lower Secondary: Invention is the major cause of pollution.
Upper Secondary: AI has done more harm than good.
Each house presented two participants per category, and the debates were a true showcase of talent, confidence, and persuasion. Our students impressed the audience and judges alike with their well-researched arguments and poise.

Our thanks to the English Department for organizing and coordinating the event.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents who took time out of their busy schedules to support the children. Your encouragement means the world and contributes to the growth of these young debaters.
And this is just the beginning. We will now compete nationally and internationally. But as they say, well begun is half done!
We’re beyond excited to share something truly special with you: our upcoming student anthology, Dear Diary: A Journey Through Time! This project is a collaboration that our secondary school students have worked on with dedication and heart. Imagine a collection of stories from our very own parents and adults in our school community, each one written as a personal letter to their younger selves.
These letters/diary entries open up about their journeys, the highs, the lows, the lessons, and the turning points that shaped them. They share advice they wish they’d known, memories of overcoming challenges, and moments of pure joy and discovery. It’s like we get to look back in time and learn from all the wisdom they’ve gathered along the way.
We believe this book will inspire all of us to think about our own lives with new perspective and courage. We’re so proud to bring Dear Diary: A Journey Through Time to life, and we can’t wait for you to experience these heartfelt stories. Keep an eye out for our launch, and join us on this incredible journey of growth, resilience, and self-reflection!
On Thursday 14th November, parents joined an online workshop focused on enhancing communication with their children. This week's assembly was done by Middle Class C. Our main focus was on the themes of senses, good manners and numbers. This was organized to enhance the students' understanding of these essential concepts while encouraging their active participation in the learning process.
They explored their five senses and highlighted the importance of good manners, reinforcing key expressions of positive communication like ’please’, ‘thank you’ and ‘excuse me’. The children exhibited confident verbal articulation and body language. We thank all parents who attended the assembly to support the young ones.
In terms of activities, the Ballet Club students were in their element this week, relishing the practice session and channelising their energies productively.
This week, the IGCSE 2 and A Levels students led an engaging assembly centered on sportsmanship, showcasing creativity, teamwork, and the core values of respect, fairness, and unity.
The event featured a lively dance routine, symbolizing the energy and cooperation in team sports. A student recited an original poem, capturing the emotions of an athlete.
A captivating piano performance followed, offering a serene reflection on composure in challenging moments.
The assembly was concluded with brief remarks by the Head of School. It was a proud moment, celebrating the talents and values of our students. We take this opportunity to appreciate parents present for the assembly for their time, encouragement and support.
This week, we officially began our first training session in preparation for the upcoming Vision2Africa football scholarship opportunity trials to the United States of America set for next month. We were pleased to have six current and former Lusaka Oaktree school students report for training at LOTS training facility:
Paul Ramsey
Joshua Muzandu
Andy Muteba
Milenko Ducic
Lwenji
These players showed up with great enthusiasm and are demonstrating their commitment to this significant opportunity. Daily updates will continue to track attendance, progress, dedication, and overall engagement as we move forward. This will help measure each player's commitment to the program, ensure consistent and adequate preparation for the trials.
Last week during our Tuesday mentoring session we conducted a student survey with a sample size of 120 secondary school students to gather valuable feedback on various aspects of school life, including, emotional well-being, academic engagement, social and behavioral development, and overall, physical and mental health and overall happiness and suggestions.
This initiative aims to ensure that student voices are heard and their experiences are considered in shaping a more inclusive and enriching learning environment. The results will help guide future improvements and initiatives and we will be sharing results soon.
We thank all students for their participation and thoughtful responses.
ECAs for the term have concluded
Library books need to be returned before Friday 22 November
If your child is going to be absent on a particular day, please inform the school in advance, and the class teacher is the first point of contact.
Please go through the exam time tables with your children so that both child and parent are on the same page
Dear LOTS Families,
We strongly urge you to prioritize your child's immediate return to school. Every day of missed classes results in academic loss, which can be challenging to recover from. Consistent attendance is essential to ensure your child does not fall behind in their studies and can fully participate in the school community.
Kind Regards,
Lusaka Oaktree School
