“Every time you want to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.”
Deepak Chopra
Dear Parents,
Talking of pioneers, we are very proud of the 12 LOTS student speakers and performers who pioneered school TEDx in Zambia. They have opened the door for the future for other school students to walk that path - exhibiting that it is never too early to start being leaders and innovators and risk takers and ideators.
Why I have brought this up again is because now all their talks and performances are up on YouTube for you to watch anytime from anywhere on earth. All you have to do is search for TEDxLOTS on YouTube. Each video, each talk and each performance - went through a rigorous vetting process at TED.com, and were approved for release after that quality check for relevance, originality, poise, clarity and language usage. You will find 16 videos - 9 student talks, 3 student performances, and 4 adult talks. All approved and vetted and published for the whole world to relish. 100% approval for LOTS. As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Congratulations yet again to all the presenters and the team that mentored them. Please note that TEDxLOTS will be back again next year. Encourage your children to strive to be a part - because this is how changemakers are born.
There are important tips and announcements and information in the rest of this newsletter, on various aspects related to your child’s progress - exam tips, mentoring updates, university admission guidance, details about upcoming events like the inter house debate and the secondary school production, ISAZ sports, and more - so please read on with attention.
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”
- Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon
We all know the quote and the event and the man. The big takeaway is to know that every small step counts. One never knows which step will become that giant leap.
Warm regards,
Shouquot Hussain
Head of School
We have put in place academic support lessons. Please support us by encouraging your child to be proactive in asking for help and take the support we are providing to them after classes and during classes.
We will be informing you if your child(ren) is at-risk and the measures we can take from school and at home.
Minimum passing and promotion criteria:
Aggregate: A minimum of 50% across all subjects.
Individual Subject Requirement: A minimum of 50% in each subject.
The library has acquired many new books and we need to be able to take care of them.. Parents have been supportive so far in paying for the damaged books or lost books but we would like all our students to take responsibility for taking care of the hooks. We need your support in reiterating this at home as well.
Our mentorship and wellbeing program will be very successful if we accept that we are all mentors. Parents to mentor the students at home, teachers to mentor the students at school, students to mentor fellow students at school. At all these levels we should emphasize on the best practices. As a school we have attached great importance to mentoring as this will help our students improve their academic achievements and holistic growth.
During the mentorship program this week, we divided secondary students by gender. Our main focus was looking at good personal hygiene and grooming. We shared a lot with our students and we expect them to implement the knowledge they acquired. We will soon do the same with the younger students.
BULLYING
May we guide our children not to do anything that brings discomfort to a friend. This can be physical or passing negative comments. We are trying our best as an institution to guide them on good behavior. Our students should embrace the values of Respect, Discipline and Empathy.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
We would like to thank our dear parents for their support. The majority of our students now report for school in proper school uniform.
COMMUNICATION
In order to serve our students better, we encourage communication through the laid down procedures to continue. When students report incidents to you, kindly make a follow up with the school for clarity.
We are thrilled to announce that all the talks and performances from our recent TEDx event have been vetted, approved by TED.com, and are now available on YouTube!
This milestone reflects the hard work and brilliant ideas shared by our inspiring speakers and performers. Whether you missed the event or wish to revisit your favorite moments, you can now watch, share, and learn from the powerful talks at your convenience.
Head over to TEdx talks YouTube channel to access the entire playlist and get inspired. Let’s continue spreading the ideas that spark change!
Extending the public speaking thread, our students are gearing up for the first ever interhouse debate at LOTS. This will take place on Friday 15th November.
Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary are the 4 categories into which the debate competition will be divided. There will be a separate age appropriate topic for each category. Each house will have 2 debaters contesting in each category - one speaking for the motion and one speaking against the motion.
Interested parents are most welcome to witness the debate. The Primary School debates are scheduled to take place from 10.25 to 11.10 hrs, and the Secondary School debates from 11.25 to 12.15 hrs. The designated venue will be the school amphitheater (weather permitting).
As mentioned last week, the Student Council and the secondary School students are independently preparing to stage the Disney musical ‘Wicked” as their annual production.
Additional updates are:
It will be staged on the 24th and 25th of January, 2025. Auditions are almost done and now rehearsals will commence. Venue is still being worked out and we will update everyone on that once finalized (the effort is to perform in school, but let's see how that pans out).
This week our mentoring was structured according to gender where male teachers sat with male students and female teachers sat with female students and had a discussion on hygiene and grooming .
It was a safe environment where students could have a "real talk" and ask questions and give honest opinions without being diplomatic and hesitant. It was filled with laughter, debate and great insight.
We hope to do more sessions like these and eventually invite parents and professionals to join the conversation. Please feel free to let us know of conversation topics we can add to subsequent sessions.
Mentoring - All girls session
Mentoring - All boys session
We are happy to introduce our first ever Parenting workshop, which is the first of many.
The Parenting Workshop will focus on the topic "Communication". We hope to equip parents with effective strategies to enhance their interactions with their children. The workshop will cover key aspects of communication, including understanding non-verbal cues, expressing emotions, giving and receiving feedback and having the important conversations. Our hope is that it will help parents build stronger and more open relationships with their children by teaching them how to foster trust, manage conflicts, and promote healthy, respectful dialogues.

The CCO (Career Counseling office) this term is actively involved in its mission- Admission to Universities Abroad for its Senior Students. All the students have had group and one on one sessions with the Counselor last month and this month we are meeting the parents of Level 2 students to decide on the final list of universities to apply. Each of the graduating students will be applying to a minimum of 8 universities in three countries. While Canada, USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand are the top choices of countries chosen by the students to pursue higher education, the Netherlands and other countries in Europe are also preferred destinations.
We plan to complete the application process by 15th Jan 2025. The parents will have to only pay the application fee as prescribed by each university when submitting the application. The entire guidance and the support during and after the application is completely free. So, students and parents are encouraged to avail this facility and write to the counselor at careercounseling@lusakaoaktree.school, to get all their queries answered by the expert.

This week's assembly was done by Middle Class A. They shared the positive affirmations they have learned that help them attain our CREED Values. Striving for excellence is our main aim. They also recognized the important role their teachers and parents play in their learning journey.
What we teach them and the positive vibes we pour into them help them grow in splendor every day. A house built on a solid foundation will stand forever. Let us continue to steer our little ones in the right direction so that they have a solid foundation that will last a lifetime. We acknowledge and thank the avid support of parents who attended.
The Early Years children had an eventful weel with a variety of activities that helped with their skill building in and out of the classroom. Constructing numbers, individual reading, soccer fitness and exercises, swimming as fun and growth.
The students of CP 1C put up an exemplary assembly, showcasing excellent communication skills and a seamless flow of events where the dots connected organically. The articulation by each student who spoke was so rich and vibrant - it was music to all our proud ears! A comprehensive display of skills learnt in the classroom and impeccable teamwork defined the event.
The major theme explored in this assembly was empathy and the tool used to explore the theme was science. Now how interesting is that? An explanation of the five senses, and engaging with some of it even in french - made the event highly impactful. Special appreciation to our dear parents for your attendance and steadfast support. Your presence motivates our students to excel. Well done, CP 1C! Keep shining!
Last Thursday, the U16/U19 volleyball teams went played an exhilarating series of games against Red Arrows Volleyball club. The boys’ and girls’ teams respectively faced capable opponents.
However, this did not stop our senior teams from competing and giving the hosts a run for their money. The teams performed really well with notable mentions being U13 player Musante Kabunda who was the youngest on the court. She made a number of great saves and scored a few points for her team. We look forward to see what she and the rest of the team will do in the ISAZ U13 volleyball fixture next weekend.
With exams around the corner, it’s time to get into gear! Here are some must-know tips to power up your revision:
Plan Your Time: Map out a revision timetable that covers all your subjects and balances your strengths and areas needing improvement.
Use Active Techniques: Try flashcards, practice papers, or explain topics to friends—teaching helps you learn!
Stay Organized: Keep your notes tidy and accessible to avoid last-minute panic.
Don’t Overwork: Short breaks are essential to stay sharp and avoid fatigue.
Remember, preparation leads to confidence. If you need support or extra guidance, reach out to your teachers or academic coordinators. You've got this!
Please avoid absenteeism now because revision and exam prep will really benefit your children with the major summative assessments and examinations
Please do not miss class group whatsapp messages, or the reading of the newsletter.
The 20 minute mentoring session from 7.20 to 7.40 is going to be more important now, so please ensure your children are definitely in school before that.
Please remember to update your contact details if anything has changed, using the tab provided in the newsletter.
Dear LOTS Families,
We strongly urge you to prioritize your child's immediate return to school. Every day of missed classes results in academic loss, which can be challenging to recover from. Consistent attendance is essential to ensure your child does not fall behind in their studies and can fully participate in the school community.
Kind Regards,
Lusaka Oaktree School
