“A thing of beauty is a joy forever” - John Keats
Dear Parents,
When your child takes her first walking step, that is beauty.
When your child comes back home and demonstrates something new he has learnt, that is beauty.
When for the first time your child challenges your point of view with an argument so sound that you are impressed, that is beauty.
In the beauty of all these growth-inducing moments, there is tremendous joy, the kind of joy other practicalities like money can never match.
Let us therefore keep collecting these joys as we partner each other in their journey through school. Yes, I know not all days will be joyful, but that very fact adds more value to joyful moments when they come.
To add to the beauty and the joy in the lives of our students, we are bringing more opportunities for them in multiple arenas - Model UN, The Scholar’s Cup, Summer School, Community outreach, additional ECAs, Talent Show (more on that next week), and more. I will now let the rest of the newslwtter tell you more about these and a lot else besides.
Warm regards,
Shouquot Hussain
Head of School

Extra Curricular Activities
Our ECAs started on Monday 13 January, 2025. Students were attended to by their coaches and patrons in their respective clubs. Only students signed up for activities and those doing learning support will be staying in school.
All students not signed up for a club or sports and are not doing learning support will not be allowed to stay in school.
Our Middle Class stream went on a trip this week. They had a fantastic time exploring the gardens of Kuzipa farm. They got a chance to plant their own strawberries as we have been learning about plants. They were able to identify the parts of a plant and mention what a plant needs to grow. They also got to feed the fish, rabbits, goats and chickens. And the highlight of their trip was holding the tortoises. Thank you Parents for being open minded and allowing our babies to experience all this first hand.
Other key interesting activities for Early Years students this week were:
Brain break after number lesson - processing information while relaxing
Learning names of fruit through fruit puzzle
Mental Math individual task.
Uniform Policy
Children are encouraged to wear the correct uniform every day, except on designated PE and tennis days. If you're unsure about the uniform requirements or need a copy of the timetable, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.
Afternoon Activities
We are thrilled to report that our afternoon activities have commenced on a positive note. An overwhelming majority of our students have signed up for these engaging activities, which promise to be both fun and enriching. If you are a new parent who did not have access to a sign-up slip, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher to express interest in enrolling your child in afternoon activities. We welcome all students to participate and look forward to hearing from you.
Homework Update
As we settle into the new term, please note that homework will be assigned consistently to reinforce classroom learning. We encourage parents to support their children in developing good study habits and ensuring timely completion of homework tasks.
For Parents with Religious Commitments
If you need to pick up your child early due to religious commitments, kindly inform your child's homeroom teacher in advance. This will enable us to make necessary arrangements and ensure a smooth dismissal process.
Upcoming Event
We're excited to kick off our assembly series next week, starting with Class CP 3B! Parents and guardians of CP 3B students are warmly invited to attend and witness the fantastic presentations their children have prepared. This is a wonderful opportunity to see your children shine and showcase their talents.

YALE SUMMER SCHOOL APPLICATIONS
We are glad to let you know that 6 of our IGCSE students have applied for the Yale Young African Scholars Program this year. It is a summer program that will be held between July and August in two sessions - both online as well as residential (In Kenya). I request you to keep them in your prayers as we wait for the final decision in March / April.
During the process, the team encountered several issues; however, we are happy that the parents have been in constant touch and supported their children during the application process. To make things better and easier in further days, kindly take some basic responsibility:
1. Follow school given deadlines.
2. Have all previous transcripts and records of your child ready - . both a soft copy as well as a physical one with the school seal or stamp.
3. Keep the passport updated
4. Follow the same details and address for all applications as in the passport.
5. Let your child know the complete address with postcode and the contact details of at least one parent by heart.
6. Ensure they share the user name and password of every application login with you. Let your mail ID be their recovery mail address.
7. Trust the process and recommendation given.
8. Please discuss or send a mail with your queries to: careercounseling@lusakaoaktree.school
9. Do not encourage students to drop studies after IGCSE. They graduate from school only after completing A levels.
A parent of an applicant had this to share:
“My experience doing the summer school application with you has been truly incredible!
You helped me understand what to do and when to do it, I don’t think I would’ve managed to do it without you, thank you so much for everything!”
ECA
Finally, the anticipation is over as we have started our ECAs. There has been more excitement with the introduction of four new clubs, namely hockey, netball, touch rugby and, by far the most popular, the skate club.
Monday saw the return of the ballet club which has gained new members eager to learn the relevé and plié. Sensei continues to amaze with more mastery of the art of Karate for our children. The skate club saw new and seasonal skaters and bladers take to the drive-way and engage in some constructive and soon to be competitive fun.
We look forward to seeing more of our children engage in various activities and sports in order to foster holistic development. We continue to emphasize that all learners that are not signed up should be collected from school. Detailed lists of sign-ups including days and activities, and schedules will be shared in class groups.
PE
The introduction of hockey to the PE syllabus for primary school has added new life to the energies of our young ones. Various learners have shown enthusiasm for learning, participating in, and developing in the sport, so much so that talks of competing in the next ISAZ Hockey season have emerged.
We encourage parents to acquire the necessary equipment such as hockey sticks and skin pads in order to make the learning experience even better. We also encourage that for those that do not yet have a PE kit, a solid black or solid white shirt may be worn with solid black shorts only.
SPORTS
Football and netball teams have been selected and are currently training for the U19, U16, U14, U11 and U9 competitions. Students that are on the U19 and U16 teams will be given a consent form that will request that they stay behind after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to facilitate adequate training and preparation.
Tips and Tools for Parents and Students
Welcome to this week’s IT corner! Here are a few tips and resources to help you stay tech-savvy and safe:
Stay Cyber-Safe: Remind your kids about the importance of strong passwords. Use phrases or a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoid sharing them with friends.
Screen Time Balance: With technology at the core of learning, screen time can add up quickly. Encourage regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Tech Tip of the Week: Did you know most apps and websites have accessibility features? Tools like text-to-speech, larger fonts, or night mode can enhance the user experience. Explore these options in device or app settings.
Stay tuned for more IT insights next week! If you have any tech-related questions or need support, feel free to reach out.
Happy learning,
Your IT Team
