The Grand Canyon is definitely one of the USA’s most famous landforms, if not the world. An estimated 4.5 million people visit the national park each year and people even live there. Take that, Great Wall of China!
Most people don’t know this but the Grand Canyon is divided into parts*. The west rim is the closest to Las Vegas at only 121 miles away. The west rim is actually not in Grand Canyon National Park. The north rim is very steep and much less touristy than the other parts and is second closest to Las Vegas. The south rim has the most tourists and is the farthest away from Las Vegas.
* There is no east rim.
This sounds hard to believe, but yes, The Grand Canyon started as a stream. Nobody really knows how the Grand Canyon started* but the most popular theory is that about 2 billion years ago, the tiny stream that would turn into the Colorado River started pushing away the surrounding walls. Over the years, those walls turned into the canyon we know today.

Many animals live in the Grand Canyon. This might surprise you, because of the dry and dusty climate, but it is true. Some of the species ( Like Black Widow spiders and Scorpions ) are very poisonous but most of them are perfectly normal. Species that live there are: Bats, Coyotes, Cougar, Raven, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagle, Turkey Vulture, Horned Lizard and more!
The Grand Canyon is GINORMOUS. It is hard to believe but this one canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and over a mile deep. Whoa. Now, let's get to the Colorado River. It is 1,450 miles long and about 300 feet wide. It’s deepest spot is 85 feet deep.
There are lots of things to do at the Grand Canyon and no wonder, it’s a national park. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a giant glass bridge that people walk on and see the canyon below. Another popular place is the Bright Angel Point trail, a popular walk. Horseshoe bend is a beautiful waterfall shaped just like a horseshoe!
