Welcome to the world of the Midwest! Right now I am talking about Prairie Dogs. Prairie Dogs are part of the Rodent family, if you were wondering. In this presentation I will talk about these five topics
Those are my topics. Enjoy!
One of its habitats, as its name suggests, is a prairie. They also sometimes house themselves in grasslands. They dog holes as homes. These holes are called Burrows or Colonies. In the Winter they hibernate in them, sometimes coming up in the morning to scavenge food. While they sleep very long at night, they are very active during the morning. They either try to find more food, expand the Burrow, and the pups usually play with each other. They are super playful.
Prairie Dogs live for about three or four years. At age two men usually leave the family to find another colony. Women stay at the colony to have babies. They die about a year after the babies are born, about the time that they are two. This process repeats itself until there are no Prairie Dogs left(Hopefully that doesn't happen anytime soon.)
Prairie Dogs have lots of special features. One of the most important ones is that they bark at each other to communicate, and to alert others of danger. This is important because if you didn’t have a way to warn others of danger, then predators could just gobble them all up. Another special feature they have is that they have very long claws. These claws are also very strong, and they enable Prairie Dogs to dig very well.
Prairie Dogs grow to be about thirteen inches long in their lifetime. They have plump bodies. All five types of Prairie Dogs have a bit of different colored fur, but all types have a bit of brown fur. They also have extremely short legs, but don’t be fooled! They can still run very fast. If they saw you they would zip right back into their hole.
Prairie Dogs don’t eat lots of foods, but they still eat a fair amount. They eat things such as grass, which is easy to find, Berries if they find them, and I probably can’t count everything they eat, but they eat lots of stuff. Grass is their main food specifically because in the areas they live most of the time there is lots of it. Also they have pretty strong teeth. Image Link
