Anson Dorrance is the coach for UNC women's soccer. He is a great coach. Under Anson Dorrance the Tar Heels have won 21 of the 31 NCAA women's soccer championships.

Albert Anson Dorrance the fourth was born in Bombay, India April 9, 1951. Anson Dorrance is a 1974 graduate of UNC with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and philosophy, in fall 2017 Anson Dorrance will enter his 41 year of service to UNC soccer programs. Anson Dorrance has been the national coach of the year for men and women, in 2012 Anson Dorrance became the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. Under Anson Dorrance only 11 times in 38 years have the Tar Heels lost more than two games in a season. Anson Dorrance has won one of the highest honors possible from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Walt Chyzowych Award for lifetime coaching achievement

UNC women’s soccer started out as a club team for students looking for high level competition then in 1977 they asked Athletic director Bill Cobey to take the club to varsity level. Cobey then asked Anson Dorrance (the men’s soccer coach) to assess the team. Dorrance was impressed by the team. Mike Byers recommended a women‘s soccer team, Cobey agreed and Hired Dorrance as the head coach and Byers as an assistant for the 1978 season. However in 1979 the Association For Intercollegiate Athletics for Women told Anson Dorrance and Chris Lidstone to establish a National women’s soccer program, at the time UNC had the only varsity women's soccer team in the southeast allowing Dorrance to recruit the most talented freshman squads in history some of those recruits won starting positions and to the team to there first and only ALAW championships. After that the UNC Women’s Soccer continued to dominate the world of collage soccer.
