How to figure out what type of mounts are used.
Check the plans
This can found on the Structural Details page (Sheet #S-4)
Refer to the installation photos
We have sections in the template that you can refer to.
The Flashing AFTER SEALING (Must show a small piece of the flashing!): section
The Skeleton Racking and Micros (Entire Array Pre-Panel Lay. Must be able to count each microinverter): section (You'll have to zoom in to see the mounts)
How to determine the roofing type.
Asphalt Shingle
Most common in U.S. homes
Granular, layered appearance, rectangular tabs
Easy to install on
Clay Tile
Found in Southwest or Spanish-style homes
Curved barrel or flat tile, usually orange/red
Fragile
Concrete Tile
Looks like clay but thicker/heavier
Uniform, square/flat, may resemble stone
Heavier than clay, also fragile
Metal Roof
Modern or rural buildings
Seam lines, standing seams, reflective or matte
May require special clamps
Wood Shake/Shingle
Rustic or older homes
Irregular wood planks, gray/brown, rough
Slate
Historic or upscale homes
Flat, stone-like tiles, often dark
Very fragile, heavy
TPO
Commercial or flat homes
White or gray, smooth membrane, seams visible
Must use ballast or adhesive mounting
Torch Down / Modified Bitumen
Another flat roof type
Black or dark gray, gritty or rubbery
Heat-welded or adhesive roofing
Synthetic
Mimics other materials
Hard to identify—could look like slate or shake but uniform
Lightweight alternative to slate/shake
A. Site Survey/Install/Reroof photos:
Texture: Asphalt is grainy; tile is slick and hollow; slate is cold and dense.
Roof edge view: You can often see the tile overlap or shingle tabs at the rake/edge.
B. Satellite / Aerial Imagery (e.g. Google Maps, Nearmap):
Color & Texture:
Asphalt = Blurry textured appearance
Metal = Glossy or matte with visible seams
Tile = Distinct rows or barrel shapes
Region Clues: Clay tile is more likely in hot climates; TPO is more likely in commercial buildings.
Should be labeled clearly in the design tab and notes
